11/8/2011  Women's golf team takes third at So. Cal. RegionalsSally Kim
The Irvine Valley women's golf team won't get a chance to defend its title at the State Championships next week. The Lasers were one spot out of advancing, taking third at the two-day Southern California Regionals at Twin Oaks in San Marcos on Tuesday. Only the top two teams from the South and the North in the state moved on. "I am still very proud of the team and what it accomplished this year," IVC Coach Ben Burnett said. "There were four very good teams in the South." Glendale moved past Palomar and won the regional title by shooting a total of 297 on the final day. Glendale won with a team score of 606. Palomar was second at 609. Irvine Valley shot 317 on the first day and 322 on the second day for a total of 639. College of the Canyons was fourth at 645, Mt. San Jacinto came in fifth at 675 and Saddleback was sixth at 733. "I still think we are the third best team in the state this year," Burnett said. "We got beat by two outstanding teams." IVC will have an individual representative at the state tournament. Freshman Sally Kim, who was the Orange Empire Conference player of the year, led IVC and qualified for state with a score of 157. The cutoff to move on as an individual was 158. Sophomores Foya Lazare (159) and Chelsea Kasprowicz (160) just missed the cut for the Lasers. Irvine Valley won the conference title this season with a record of 28-0.     Team results     Individual results

Freshman Sally Kim, who was the OEC player of the year, was next for Irvine Valley at 80. Freshman Halle Young shot 82 and sophomore Taylor Moore and freshman Toni Honnes each shot 85 for the Lasers. One of those scores was the throwout score. "On paper the results so far are as they should be," IVC Coach Ben Burnett said. "We know what we are up against, but I think we have a chance to move up. We just have to go out and play golf." The tournament finishes up with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.

11/3/2011  Women's golf team completes undefeated conference seasonSally Kim
As expected the Irvine Valley women's golf team ran away from the field to win the Orange Empire Conference Championships tournament at Los Serranos in Chino Hills on Wednesday. The Lasers finished the two-day tournament with a score of 677 to out-distance Saddleback (706), Fullerton (784), Cuyamaca (878) and Santa Ana (no team score). Irvine Valley, which had already wrapped up the conference title after regular season matches last week, improved its record to 28-0 in conference. The conference finals also ended up determining the conference player of the year. IVC teammates Foya Lazare and Sally Kim were first and second in the conference individual rankings heading into the tournament, which started on Monday. Kim edged Lazare for the honor.
The freshman shot 83 on Monday and then 82 on a windy day on Wednesday to finish with a total of 165. Lazare, who is a sophomore, shot 81 and 85 for a score of 166. She finished second in theFoya Lazare, Taylor Moore and Chelsea Kasprowicz
conference individual rankings. It was the fourth straight year that IVC took player of the year honors. Nicole Rivera, now playing at Cal State Fullerton, won the title the last two years. Kim, like Rivera, went to Cypress High. Kim, Lazare, freshman Halle Young and sophomore Chelsea Kasprowicz were each named first team all-conference for the Lasers. Sophomore Taylor Moore was selected to the second team. And IVC Coach Ben Burnett was picked as the conference's coach of the year for the second year in a row. Irvine Valley will now turn its attention to trying to defend its state title. The Lasers along with Saddleback moved on from conference to compete in the Southern California Regionals at Twin Oaks in the San Diego area next Monday. The top two teams from the So. Cal. 11/1/2011  Lasers lead after first day of conference golf finalsSally Kim
Unusually high scores dominated the score sheet, on day one of Orange Empire Conference finals. Players battled to outscore teammates in what appeared to be a frantic scramble to move up on the all-conference rankings on Monday at Los Serranos in Chino Hills. IVC sophomore Foya Lazare and freshman Sally Kim were expected to each score close to even par 74's on the North Course. The duo is battling for the top position in the individual rankings in the OEC. Lazare posted an 81 and Kim an 83. Lazare's score moved her 1 stroke ahead of Kim to take over the lead in their battle to win the conference scoring championship. Freshman Halle Young's 81 tied Saddleback's alternate sixth player as medalist for the day. Sophomore Toni Honnes, IVC's alternate sixth player, scored a 91 to complete IVC's first day total of 337. The Lasers have already wrapped up the Foya Lazareconference title. Saddleback's total was  353.  Fullerton came in at 386 and Cuyamaca finished at 445. Santa Ana did not qualify to post a team score with only two players competing. Irvine Valley Coach Ben Burnett felt that his Lasers and Saddleback both scored about 20 team strokes higher than expected. "This was a good lesson for each member of the team," Burnett said. "He reminded the team that when you try too hard or place too much importance on what you scored on the last hole, you lose the focus needed to execute strategy and good course management. The team knows that Saddleback can't beat IVC (in the final standings). Only when we loses focus do we open the door to the possibility of being upset." IVC finishes the conference finals on Wednesday at Los Serranos. Burnett said the team will then meet with sports psychologist  Dr. David Wright, PGA, on Friday. "It appears to be very timely as the team prepares to attempt the defense of its state title through the So. Cal. Regionals Nov. 7 and 8 at the Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos," Burnett said.

10/27/2011  Women's golf team clinches Orange Empire Conference title2011 IVC women's golf team
The Irvine Valley women's golf team clinched its second straight Orange Empire Conference title Wednesday. And the Lasers did it with a win over rival Saddleback on Saddleback's home course at Arroyo Trabuco. Irvine Valley finished with a five-player team score of 313 in the match, which was a make-up from a contest that was rained out three weeks ago. Saddleback had a team score of 332. Irvine Valley kept its record in conference play perfect. The Lasers improved their record to 20-0 overall. Irvine Valley freshman Sally Kim was the medalist on the day, finishing with a even par score of 72. Her three birdies over the final nine holes produced a 1 under par back nine score to combine with her 1 over par score on the nine holes. IVC Coach Ben Burnett said sophomore team captain Foya Lazare volunteered to go in the first group, taking on Saddleback's top two players. Although she bogeyed 3 of the last four holes, Lazare posted a 4 over par score of 76. She gave IVC a 16-stroke lead over Saddleback's two scores of 80 and 86. After Saddleback's next score, and IVC's next two scores, the match was tied. Both teams were looking to their last three matches to help put together the best four of six scores to determine which rival would emerge victorious. Kim delivered the crushing blow with her 72. Freshman Halle Young's 81 and sophomore Taylor Moore's 84 combined to enable IVC to beat Saddleback by 19 strokes in the final match of the regular conference season. IVC now heads into the conference finals next Monday and Wednesday at the Los Serranos par 74 north course. But no one can catch Irvine Valley. An interesting story at the conference finals, however, will be which Irvine Valley golfer earns player of the year recognition. Kim and Lazare were neck and neck for the top spot in the individual scoring rankings heading into this week's action.

10/25/2011  Kim takes over conference individual ranking lead from teammateHalley Young and Sally Kim

The super freshmen duo of Halle Young and Sally Kim led the Irvine Valley women's golf team to another Orange Empire Conference victory on Wednesday. Kim bogeyed the next two holes while waiting for normal feeling to return. But she scored pars on the final two holes to post her 5 over score of 79. "Sally is a tough competitor," Coach Ben Burnett said. "Golf competition rules allow an injured player 15 minutes to recover or withdraw due to illness or injury. Sally chose to complete with round with the use of a ziplocked bag of ice. I expect Sally to be ready to play when the team travels to Twin Oaks on Monday for a practice round on the So. Cal. Regionals course." IVC's next conference match is Oct. 26 at Arroyo Trabuco against second-place Saddleback.

9/11/2001  Women's golf team takes third overall in Palm Springs2011 women's golf team
The Irvine Valley women's golf team edged Bakersfield to capture third place in the 11-team Palm Springs Desert Invitational Golf Tournament last weekend. IVC used second round scores of 77 by freshman Sally Kim, sophomore Foya Lazare, and freshman Halle Young plus an 81 by sophomore Taylor Moore for a team score of 312 on the second day to combine with an opening-day score of 314 to take third-place recognition at the awards ceremony. Palomar captured both the Ventura Invitational and the Desert Classic. Palomar's winning score of 299 and 301 serves notice that it will be the team to beat if IVC is to defend its State Championship title. Glendale gave Palomar it toughest competition in both Ventura and Palm Springs. IVC Coach Ben Burnett was pleased with the play and the potential of his 2011 team. He said his goal was to use the two preseason tournaments to allow his team to bond and to evaluate the talent level of the other top teams in the state. "We have shown that we should open the season as the third-ranked team in the state," Burnett said. "We are talented, but I expect us to improve as the season progresses by putting a greater emphasis on course management and strategy." He also expects the team to improve its putting statistics by improving the speed of their first putts. "We have two primary goals," Burnett said. "The first goal is to focus on winning the Orange Empire Conference Championship. And the second is to improve course management and strategy and speed of first putts in order to reduce scores higher than a bogey during competitive rounds of golf. "Last year's state championship team used this plan and played its most efficient golf during the conference finals, So. Cal. Regionals and at the State Finals."

"Our scores and tournament standing is very similar to last season's result in this tournament," Irvine Valley Coach Ben Burnett said. "Based on this tournament, Palomar is the favorite this year with College of the Canyons, Irvine Valley and Bakersfield in contention. We will get an even better idea of where everyone is at after the Desert Invitational." Irvine Valley plays in the Desert Invitational Sept. 8-10 at Indian Canyons in Palm Springs.

8/26/2011  Irvine Valley women's golf team 2011 previewSophomores Foya Lazare, Taylor Moore and Chelsea Kasprowicz
The Irvine Valley women's golf team captured the first state championship in program history last year. But IVC Coach Ben Burnett said his 2011 squad has the potential to be even better. "I am certainly optimistic that we can repeat as conference champions, move through the regionals and get to the state," Burnett said. "That would be our goal." Irvine Valley, which also won its first ever Southern California regional title a year ago, rallied from five shots down after the first day to defeat College of the Canyons by four strokes for the state crown last season at Los Serranos in Chino Hills. IVC will be without its best player from last season. Orange Empire Conference and Southern California player of the year Nicole Rivera has moved on to play at Cal State Fullerton. But Irvine Valley has four players back from last year's squad, including three all-conference selections. They are Chelsea Kasprowicz, Foya Lazare and Taylor Moore. Kasprowicz tied with Rivera for medalist honors on the final day of the Orange Empire Conference finals, which IVC won, last year. Lazare was the medalist on the first day of conference finals last season. Kasprowicz averaged 79.9 strokes per round last season during conference, Moore finished at 83.2 and Lazare was at 83.9. "They are going to lead us," Burnett said. "All are very good players. They are looking forward to going after another great season." The other player from last year's squad that is back is Ashley Penner, who Burnett said is much improved. Toni Honnes, who red-shirted Freshmen Halle Young and Sally Kimlast season, is another part of this year's group. "I am quite pleased with how she has developed," Burnett said. And Burnett has two standout freshmen that are expected to be a big part of the team. Sally Kim from Cypress High and Halle Young from Marina High were each named second team all-Orange County last season. Young and Kim each shot the lowest scores at a recent IVC practice round, according to Burnett. "I am very pleased with the two new girls," Burnett said. "They are both playing quite well. They are game ready. I like what I am seeing." The Lasers open the season on Sunday in the two-day South Coast Classic at Buenaventura in Ventura. "There will be some other good teams so it will give us a good look at them," Burnett said. "it will give us an idea of how we stack up." Burnett said he expects Saddleback, Santa Barbara and College of the Canyons to be among the other top teams in Southern California. "The keys for us are going to be keeping everybody healthy and getting better as the season goes on," Burnett said.

5/2/2011  Women's golf coach recognized by LPGA commissioner
LPGA Tour Commissioner Mike Whan recently sent a congratulatory note to Irvine Valley women's coach Ben Burnett. Whan congratulated Burnett's women's golf team for earning the California Community College state title in November of 2010. Whan also expressed appreciation for Burnett's efforts to promote all community college women's golf team programs. He expressed a wish for Irvine Valley to continue its successful women's golf program. Burnett said his team is looking forward to trying to defend its state title next season. Five of the team's six starters are expected to return in the fall. The Lasers lose conference player of the year Nicole Rivera, who recently signed with Cal State Fullerton. Burnett is anticipating that he will get two solid recruits and one redshirt player to also contribute next season.

2/28/2011  Former IVC golfers shining at four-year schools
Former Irvine Valley women's golfers Felicia Titus and Samantha Roberts are both standing out for their four-year college programs. Titus, who was IVC's female scholar athlete of the year and the Orange Empire Conference player of the year in 2008, is in the starting lineup at Cal State San Marcos. Titus, who finished eighth in state, started at Cal State Fullerton before transferring this season to San Marcos.
