Women's basketball team picks up first conference win

It wasn't pretty, but the Irvine Valley women's basketball team earned its first win in Orange Empire Cofnerence play.
The Lasers held on to beat Santa Ana, 43-38, Wednesday night at home.
Irvine Valley jumped out to a 18-8 lead at the end of the first half, limiting Santa Ana to just two field goals in the opening 20 minutes.
But Santa Ana rallied in the second half. And the score was tied, 38-38, late in the contest.
But IVC out-scored Santa Ana, 5-0, to end the game.
Freshman guard Erika Garcia made a free throw with 1:26 left to put IVC ahead, 39-38, and then after a Santa Ana turnover freshman forward Ashley Dunn knocked down a jumper with 1:03 to play to put IVC ahead, 41-38.
Irvine Valley improved its record to 13-11 overall and 1-4 in conference, while Santa Ana slipped to 7-16 overall and 0-5 in conference.
The Lasers were paced by Dunn. She finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Dunn was an imporatnt 8 of 8 from the free throw line.
Garcia added eight points and three steals and freshman forwards Lamija Silajdzic and Sydney Hughes each contributed six points.
IVC shot just 21.8 percent for the game (12 of 55). But the Lasers were helped by Santa Ana's 30 turnovers and the Dons missing 12 of 21 free throws.
The Lasers committed 22 turnovers of their own.
Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, hosting Cypress at 5:30 p.m.
