Women's basketball comes up short against Fullerton

The Irvine Valley women's basketball nearly pulled off a big come-from-behind win Wednesday night.
The Lasers had their chances at the end, but ended up short, falling, 55-52, in an Orange Empire Conference opener at home.
IVC, which trailed for much of the game, had a chance to tie it at the buzzer, but freshman guard Erika Garcia's three-pointer from the top of the arc was just off the mark.
Garcia and
freshman forward Courtney Kollasch led IVC with 12 points each. Garcia also had four
assists and two steals.
Sophomore forward Ashley Dunn chipped in 10 points and Sydney
Hughes finished with eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.
But the Lasers were hurt on the boards,
getting out-rebounded, 40-26, in the contest.
IVC's record slipped to 12-8 overall.
Fullerton, which led, 31-26, at halftime, was led by Kelly Thompson, who had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Danielle Ekno added 11 points and nine rebounds for the Hornets.
IVC will try and get its first OEC win Friday night when it hosts conference favorite Orange Coast at 5:30 p.m.
Orange Coast will be playing in its Orange Empire Conference opener Friday night. The Pirates had a bye on Wednesday.
OCC, which is ranked 15th
in the state and 12th in Southern California, has a record of 13-6
overall. The Pirates won six of seven games to start the season and are
on a two-game win streak heading into Friday.
They beat Palomar,
54-52, on Jan. 3 in their last game. OCC is led by Casey Gomez, who is
averaging 11.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.7 steals and
Simone Ibbotson, who is averaging 11.1 points.
For Irvine Valley, Kollasch leads the team,
averaging 13.5 points and 5.8 rebounds with Dunn averaging 9.5 points
and 7.5 rebounds.
