Women's basketball team tops LA Valley

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team ran its win streak to three games with a 61-56 victory over LA Valley Saturday night at home.
Irvine Valley improved its record to 5-2 overall.
"It was our second game in two days and third this week and the girls were a little tired, but I was proud of their effort," Coach Julie Hanks said.
Irvine Valley was led by freshman Erika Garcia, who had 18 points. Garcia made 7 of 16 shots from the field.
Sophomore Alleson Frampton added 11 points and six rebounds and freshman Courtney Kollasch had nine points.
The Lasers also got a solid performance from sophomore Ashley Dunn, who finished with eight points, 12 rebounds and three assists. Freshman point guard Ivy Melo addd three points, five assists and six rebounds.
The Lasers led by as many as 13 points in the first half. A basket by freshman Sydney Hughes gave them a 38-25 advantage with 1:33 left in the opening half.
Irvine Valley took a 40-29 lead into the break after Dunn grabbed an offensive rebound and scored with three seconds left.
Garcia had 12 points in the first half.
But LA Valley didn't go away. The Monarchs cut into the Lasers lead. LA Valley pulled to within 51-48 on an offensive rebound and basket by Juanita Lewis.
Irvine Valley went up, 57-48, on a jumper by Kollasch with 5:44 to play. But LA Valley went on a 8-2 run and got within 59-56 on a basket inside by Liseth Orrego with 1:06 to play.
And LA Valley had a chance to get even closer, but Lewis missed a lay-up with 10 seconds left. IVC grabbed the rebound and freshman Brittney Horton found Frampton alone for an easy basket to end the game.
Irvine Valley shot 41 percent from the floor (25 of 61) and out-rebounded LA Valley, 40-36.
The Lasers play again on Tuesday, hosting El Camino at 3 p.m. The time has been switched from 6 p.m. to 3 p.m. because Irvine Valley will be hosting the first round of the women's volleyball playoffs Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
