Women's basketball team takes third in San Diego

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team started its 2008-09 season with two victories and a third-place finish overall in the San Diego Mesa Tip-Off Tournament last weekend.
The Lasers defeated Grossmont, 73-59, on Friday. IVC trailed, 27-26, at halftime, but out-scored the Griffins, 47-32, in the second half for the win.
IVC shot a solid 55.9 percent (19 of 34) in the final 20 minutes.
The Lasers were led by freshman Courtney Kollasch, who had 14 points. Freshman Erika Garcia added 13 points and seven rebounds and freshman Ivy Melo finished with 12 points. Freshman Brittney Horton contributed nine points and 11 rebounds in the win.
The Lasers dropped their next game, 77-61, to Rio Hondo on Saturday. Rio Hondo went on to capture the tournament title.
Kollasch had 21 points and seven rebounds, sophomore Ashley Dunn chipped in 11 points and Horton had eight rebounds for the Lasers.
Irvine Valley got some heroics from sophomore Allison Frampton in its third-place 47-46 win over Oxnard on Sunday.
Frampton hit the game-winning shot. She finished with six points in the game.
Kollasch was the team's leading scorer for the third game in a row with 12 points. Garcia also scored 12 points for the Lasers. Dunn added seven points.
Kollasch was named to the all-tournament team for the Lasers.
Irvine Valley plays again on Wednesday, traveling to Palomar for a non-conference game at 3 p.m.
