Women's basketball team gets commitments
May 20, 2008

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team has received commitments from four players for the 2008-09 season, announced head coach Julie Hanks.

They are forward Sydney Hughes from Esperanza, guard Ericka Garcia from Pacifica, guard Brittney Horton from Ocean View and guard/forward Courtney Kollasch from Damonte Ranch in Reno, Nev.

Hughes, a 5-10 forward, averaged 5.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game in helping Esperanza finish with a 17-11 record overall this past season. Esperanza was 8-2 in the Sunset League for second place.

She also averaged 1.7 assists and 1.8 steals per game. Hughes had a season-high 17 points in a win over Fountain Valley and a season-high 19 rebounds in a win over Newport Harbor. She had seven games on the season with at least 10 rebounds.

Garcia, a 5-5 guard, averaged 13.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.3 steals for Pacifica. Pacifica finished with a record of 15-12 overall and 7-3 in the Empire League for second place.

She was second on the team in scoring, rebounding and steals.

Garcia scored in double figures in 18 games, including the team's final seven contests of the season. She hit the 20-point mark four times, with her high being 26 points in her team's win over Fountain Valley.

Horton, a 5-5 guard, helped lead Ocean View to a Golden West League title this past season. Ocean View finished with a record of 18-9 on the year and was 9-1 in league play.

And Kollasch, a 5-8 guard/forward, had quite a career at Damonte Ranch in Nevada. She was a four-year starter on varsity and holds the school's all-time scoring record for points with 1,611.

She ranked third in Northern Nevada for three-pointers this past season. Kollasch was a first team all-region, first team all-league and all-tournament team player.
She is also graduating in the top 10 percent of her class.

Kollasch was also a standout soccer player at the school.

Irvine Valley finished with a record of 18-13 overall this past season and made the Southern California Regional playoffs.
