Women's basketball team hosts Imperial Valley Saturday
Jan 04, 2008

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team plays its final game before the start of Orange Empire Conference action this Saturday.

Irvine Valley will take on Imperial Valley at 3 p.m. The game is part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The men's squad plays LA Valley at 5:30 p.m.

The Irvine Valley women's squad has a record of 10-5 overall.
The Lasers started the season winning nine of their first 10 games, but have dropped four of the last five.

IVC lost in the finals of its own tournament in early December to Chaffey and then suffered three straight losses – two straight coming in the Imperial Valley Tournament (including one, 68-67, to Saddleback).

The Lasers then split games in the COD tournament, losing to San Bernardino Valley, 49-37, on Dec. 28 and beating Desert, 80-62, on Dec. 29.

On the season, freshman forward Tiffany Smith leads the way, averaging 18.6 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game.

Sophomore guard/forward Jenna Schonfeld is averaging 9.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game and freshman center D.J. Butler is averaging 9.5 points and 6.5 rebounds.

Freshman forward Ashley Dunn is adding 8.3 points and 3.2 rebounds and freshman guard Patrice Fuentes is contributing 5.5 points, 5.5 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game.

Imperial Valley has a record of 8-9. The team is coming off 59-46 defeat to Snow College on Thursday.

The Arabs have already faced three Orange Empire Conference teams, losing to Golden West, Saddleback and Riverside, although the games with Golden West (61-58) and Saddleback (63-57) were both close.

Imperial Valley is led by Angelica Lopez, Brandi Webb and Melissa Hernandez. Lopez is averaging 20.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.3 steals per game, Webb is averaging 12.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.1 steals and Hernandez is averaging 13.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and 5.6 assists.

Tasha Green is also a heavy contributor, averaging a team-high 12.1 rebounds per contest to go along with 5.6 points. Brenna Jackson chips in 6.1 points per game.

Irvine Valley will play again next Wednesday, hosting Orange Coast in the first Orange Empire game of the season. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
