Consolation championship game
Merced 62 – Golden West 25
Merced led, 36-13, at halftime and cruised to the victory. Merced improved its record to 8-6 on the year.
Merced was led by Jhinnae Clark, who had 15 points and five steals, Tanisha Reed, who had 14 points and six rebounds and Kenyatta Harper, who finished with 13 points, 14 rebounds and four steals.
San Diego Mesa held an early 9-8 lead, but went cold the rest of the first half. Mesa shot just 15.2 percent for the game (7 of 46) and committed 28 turnovers. Gillian Griffin had six points and six rebounds and Simone Byrd contributed 10 rebounds for the Olympians.
Third place game
Rio Hondo 87 – Grossmont 73
Grossmont had four more field games in the game than Rio Hondo (29-25), but it was three-pointers that were the difference for the Roadrunners.
Rio Hondo attempted an amazing 49 three-pointers in the game and made 17 of them (34.7 percent) to pull away for the victory. The Roadrunners led, 39-34, and then pulled away late in the second half. Teresa Nguyen had 24 points, seven assists and three steals, Yanet Enriquez finished with 23 points and six rebounds, Elena Agabao had 16 points and Amanda Ragains added 10 rebounds and five assists in the win for Rio Hondo.
Nguyen made six three-pointers and Agabao and Enriquez each connected on five three-pointers. Rio Hondo improved its record to 10-5 on the year.
For Grossmont, Shatori Dearman had 22 points and eight rebounds and Liz Riedel added 20 points and 10 rebounds. Morgan Craig had six assists. The Griffins out-rebounded Rio Hondo, 54-44, but had 23 turnovers.
Championship game
Chaffey 68 – Irvine Valley 57
In a battle between the last two tournament champions (Chaffey 2005 and Irvine Valley 2006), Chaffey came out on top again thanks to a strong second half performance.
Chaffey, which is ranked seventh in Southern California and 16th in the state, trailed, 36-32, at halftime, but outscored Irvine Valley, 36-21, in the second half.
Irvine Valley, ranked 13th in Southern California, shot just 17.2 percent (5 of 29) from the field in the second half in the defeat.
The Lasers led, 45-41, after a three-pointer by Ashley Dunn with 14:12 left. But Chaffey then went on a 12-1 run. Back-to-back three-pointers by Aundria Anderson and Tamesha Jackson put Chaffey ahead, 53-46, with 7:19 to play.
IVC got as close as four points (59-55) with 3:50 left after a Tiffany Smith steal and lay-up. But tournament MVP Keisha Mackall nailed a three-pointer the next time down the floor to just about put the game away. It gave the Panthers a 62-55 advantage with 3:10 to go.
All-tournament player Christina Warren sealed the victory with a three-point play with 1:01 left to put Chaffey ahead, 68-57.
Mackall had 20 points and four steals and Warren and Jackson each added 13 points to lead Chaffey. Aundria Anderson contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds and Zipporah Brown had 12 rebounds for the Panthers. Chaffey out-rebounded IVC, 52-45 in the game.
Irvine Valley, which shot 27.7 percent (18 of 65) from the floor overall, was led by Jenna Schonfeld. She had 19 points and six rebounds. Ashley Dunn added 12 points and seven rebounds and Smith had seven points, 10 rebounds and three steals.
It was the second runner-up appearance in a tournament this year for IVC. The Lasers also finished second in the San Diego Mesa Tip-Off Classic (losing to Cerritos in the final).
Chaffey improved its record to 10-2 on the year, while IVC slipped to 9-2.
