IVC Women's Basketball Tournament - Second Day Results/Final Day Schedule

Games took place Friday, Dec. 7 at Irvine Valley's Hart Gymnasium

Irvine Valley defeated Grossmont, 71-55, in championship semifinal round
Grossmont - Shatori Dearman 18 points, Morgan Ehmke 12 points, 7 rebounds, Michelle Gonzalez, 12 points, 8 rebounds
Irvine Valley - Tiffany Smith 21 points, 7 rebounds (20 points in first half), DJ Butler 17 points, 8 rebounds, Ashley Dunn 15 pionts, Jenna Schonfeld 10 points, 5 rebounds.

IVC led by as many as 18 points in the first half, but Grossmont made it a game in the second half, cutting the Lasers lead to nine points (63-54) on a three-pointer by La Tasha Dowell with five minutes to play. A three-pointer by Patrice Fuentes with 3:31 to go put the Lasers up by 12 points and sealed the win. IVC takes on Chaffey in the tournament championship on Saturday, Dec. 8 at 4 p.m.
Irvine Valley won the tournament in 2005 and Chaffey took the title in 2006. Chaffey is ranked 16th in the state and seventh in Southern California, while IVC is ranked 13th in Southern California.

Chaffey defeated Rio Hondo, 78-60, in championship semifinal round
Rio Hondo - Yanet Enriquez 14 points, Elena Ababao 12 points, Teresa Nguyen 12 points, 4 assists
Chaffey - Keisha Mackall 25 points, 5 assists, 4 steals, Aundria Anderson 16 ponits, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, Zipporah 9 points, 7 rebounds

The game was tied, 39-39, at halftime, thanks to Rio Hondo making 7 of 15 three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes. Chaffey played a solid second half and Rio Hondo had trouble scoring, shooting just 6 of 25 (24 percent) from the floor in the second frame. Chaffey also had 18 assists, 17 offensive rebounds and out-rebounded Rio Hondo overall, 44-37.

Merced 68 defeated Golden West 25, in consolation round game
Merced - Kenyatta Harper 17 points, 13 rebounds, Tanisha Reed 16 points, 7 rebounds, Raquel Martinez 10 points
Golden West - Deena Hyman 11 points, 9 rebounds

The game was decided midway through the first half after Merced jumped out to a 31-1 lead. Merced led, 45-6, at the end of the first half. Golden West shot just 2 of 19 (10.5 percent) in the first half and 9 of 48 (18.8 percent) from the field in the game.

San Diego Mesa defeated College of the Desert, 65-58, in overtime in a consolation round game
San Diego Mesa - Joy Edwards 20 points, 14 rebounds, Amanda Mills 19 points, gillian Griffin 10 points, Simone Byrd 10 rebounds
Desert - Christin Graves 23 points, 9 rebounds, 6 steals, Bianca Barragan 16 points (4 of 25 from the field), 6 assists

Desert shot just 29.6 percent (21 of 71), including 10 percent (1 of 10) in the overtime period. Mesa won despite committing 34 turnovers.


Final Day Sechedule (Dec. 8)

12 p.m. - Merced vs. San Diego Mesa (consolation title game)
2 p.m. - Rio Hondo vs. Grossmont (third place game)
4 p.m. - Chaffey vs. Irvine Valley (championship game)
