Women's basketball tournament starts Thursday

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team begins hosting its tournament Thursday afternoon.

Four games will be played on both Thursday and Friday and three games are slated for Saturday at IVC. The championship game is at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Irvine Valley opens against San Diego Mesa on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Other games on Thursday are Rio Hondo against Golden West at 2 p.m., Chaffey against Merced at 4 p.m. and Grossmont against College of the Desert at 8 p.m.

The Lasers won the inaugural tournament title in 2005.

Irvine Valley, which has a record of 7-1 on the season.
 
Chaffey comes in as the highest ranked team. The Panthers (7-2) are ranked 16th in the state and seventh in Southern California in this week's coaches polls. Last year's tournament most valuable player Christina Warren is back for Chaffey.

Irvine Valley is ranked 13th in Southern California.
The Lasers have won five straight games, including at Santa Monica, 95-70, last Friday night.

Irvine Valley got a special performance from freshman Tiffany Smith in the victory.
She finished with 49 points, which was an IVC record for most points in a game. Smith broke the school record of 39 points set last season by Emily Luckeroth.

Smith made 16 of 29 shots from the field and 17 of 20 free throws. She also had 17 rebounds, eight steals and three blocks in what ended up as the most dominant effort in school history.


Irvine Valley got eight points from sophomore forward Nicole Tait and five points, seven rebounds, 10 assists and four steals from freshman point guard Patrice Fuentes in the win over Santa Monica.
