Record night for women's basketball team
Jan 24, 2007
It was a record night for the Irvine Valley women’s basketball team on Wednesday.
Sophomore forward Emily Luckeroth broke her own school record for points in a game with 39 as the Lasers rolled to a 94-66 Orange Empire Conference victory over Golden West at home.
The previous record was the 35 points Luckeroth scored in a win over Chaffey on Dec. 8, 2005.
Luckeroth made 16 of 23 shots from the field against Golden West and was 6 of 11 from behind the three-point line.
“I had no idea she had that many (points),” Irvine Valley Coach Julie Hanks said. “She really got it going there in the second half. She couldn’t miss for a while.”
Luckeroth had 13 points in the first half and added 26 in the second half for the record total.
Luckeroth also finished with nine rebounds, five assists, two steals and one block.
A number of other Laser players also shot well in the game. Irvine Valley finished with a school record for three pointers made in a game with 18 (18 of 36).
Sophomore guard Danyelle Swenson was 6 of 12 from behind the arc and finished with 18 points. Swenson also had a team-high seven assists.
Freshman forward Nicole Tait made 4 of 7 three-pointers and finished with 14 points.
Freshman center Kayla Acromite had a team-high 12 rebounds.
Irvine Valley shot 34 of 68 from the field (50 percent) in the game.
The Lasers also finished with a season-high 26 assists.
“Everyone came ready to play tonight,” Hanks said.
Maybe most importantly, Irvine Valley broke a three-game losing streak in conference play.
The Lasers improved their record to 10-11 overall and 2-5 in conference.
Golden West slipped to 2-19 overall and 0-7 in conference with the loss.
The Rustlers got a solid game from freshman center Siutiti Takai, who had 33 points and 13 rebounds. She made 15 of 23 shots from the field.
Freshman forward Jessica Jones added 11 points and six rebounds and sophomore guard Nao Kitsuda had a game-high 12 assists.
Golden West shot 47.4 percent from the field (27 of 57) and out-rebounded Irvine Valley, 43-35, in the game.
The Lasers start the second round of conference action on Friday with a 7:30 p.m. game at Santa Ana.
