Women's basketball team picks up first conference win

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team earned its first Orange Empire Conference win and sent Riverside to its ifth straight loss and seventh defeat in its last eight contests with a 86-82 win over the Tigers Wednesday night in Riverside.
Irvine Valley’s Emily Luckeroth had a
career night for the Lasers with 15 points, 16 rebounds and nine
assists in 35 minutes and Danyelle Swenson scored a team-high 29
points.
Two other players—Kayla Acromite and Katie Ryan added 10 each
for the Lasers, who made 11 three pointers in the game. Swenson made
eight (on 15 attempts).
Riverside countered with 31 points from
Debbie Barragan and 23 from Jatarra Pryor.
Irvine Valley built a huge first-half lead and then made it
stand up down the stretch. The Lasers went up by 16 points (47-31) at halftime as
Irvine Valley hit seven three-pointers in the first half, and Riverside
went scoreless for the first four minutes of the game.
At one point
Irvine Valley led by as many as 21 points in the first half.
Riverside
made a run late in the game, getting within 11 points with 2:45
remaining. Irvine Valley rebuilt its lead to 15 points before the
Tigers cut the lead to nine with two minutes remaining. With just over
a minute remaining, Riverside had the lead down to seven.
In the final seconds, Riverside managed to get within four on a Barragan steal and lay up, but Irvine Valley held on.
Irvine Valley improved its record to 9-8 overall and 1-2 in conference, while Riverside slipped to 6-14 overall and 0-3 in conference.
The Lasers play host to conference favorite, Orange Coast, Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
