Women's basketball team downs Santa Monica

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team won its second game in a row, defeating Santa Monica, 82-74, Wednesday night at home.

The Lasers had five players score in double figures. They were led by sophomore guard Danyelle Swenson, who finished with 19 points and five assists. Swenson made 6 of 9 shots from the field, including 5 of 8 from three-point range.

Freshman forward Jenna Schonfeld had 14 points and freshman guard Katie Ryan and freshman center Kayla Acromite each added 12 points. Ryan also finished with a team-high six assists, while Acromite led the squad in rebounds with 14.

Irvine Valley out-rebounded Santa Monica, 45-38.

The other player in double figures for the Lasers was sophomore forward Emily Luckeroth, who finished with 11 points.

The Lasers had an up and down first half, but still managed to take a 33-32 lead into the break. Irvine Valley shot just 35.3 percent (12 of 34) from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

Irvine Valley was much better in the second half, putting up 49 points and making 16 of 33 shots from the floor (48.5 percent). The Lasers also put the game away by making their free throws in the second half, nailing 13 of 17.

The game was tied, 60-60, with just under seven minutes to play when Irvine Valley went on a 5-0 run. Schonfeld grabbed an offensive rebound and scored and then Luckeroth hit a three-pointer to give Irvine Valley the lead for good.

Luckeroth extended the team's lead to 71-65 with a basket with 4:32 to play and Schonfeld sealed the win with a three-point play (basket and free throw) with 2:40 left.

Irvine Valley is now off until Dec. 7 when it begins hosting its own Irvine Valley Women's Tournament. The tournament runs next Thursday through Saturday with four games each of the first two days and three games on Saturday, Dec. 9.

Irvine Valley begins play next Thursday at 6 p.m. against Chaffey. The Lasers are the defending champions of the event, having beat Compton in the final a year ago.
