Women's basketball team beats Southwestern
Nov 27, 2006
The Irvine Valley women's basketball team improved its record to 3-3 on the season with a 61-55 victory at Southwestern in San Diego last Wednesday.
Freshman guard Katie Ryan led the way for the Lasers with 15 points. Freshman center Kayla Acromite added 10 points and 14 rebounds and freshman forward Jenna Schonfeld contributed 11 points.
"The young players are really coming along," Irvine Valley Coach Julie Hanks said. "We played really well, especially down the stretch and made some free throws when it counted against Southwestern."
The team had dropped its previous game, losing at Palomar, 75-52. Sophomore forward Emily Luckeroth paced Irvine Valley with 20 points in the losing effort. Sophomore guard Danyelle Swenson had 10 points and four assists and Acromite chipped in with seven points and 12 rebounds.
"We outscored them in the second half, which was encouraging," Hanks said. "But we couldn't match up with them on the boards and we had trouble stopping their top player."
Sabrina Gonzalez scored 24 points on 9 of 13 shooting from the field for Palomar.
Irvine Valley plays Santa Monica Wednesday at 6 p.m. at home in Hart Gymnasium. Santa Monica enters the game with a record of 4-2 overall.
And Irvine Valley will then host its IVC Women’s Tournament Dec. 7-9.
The Lasers are the defending champions of the event, having defeated Compton in the title game a year ago.
