1/31/2012  Women's basketball team ranked 15th in Southern California

For the first time this season, the Irvine Valley women's basketball team is ranked in the California Community Colleges Women's Basketball Coaches Association South Region Poll. The Lasers were No. 15 in the poll, which was released on Monday. Irvine Valley has a record of 13-11 overall and 4-2 in the Orange Empire Conference. Both losses were close and to teams that have been ranked all season (Saddleback and Fullerton). IVC has won three of its last four games with the one loss being one of the team's best efforts of the season. Irvine Valley narrowly fell to Fullerton, 67-63, in overtime in a conference game last Wednesday at home. Three other teams from the conference are also ranked with Saddleback at No. 6, Fullerton at No. 9 and Cypress at No. 11. Irvine Valley begins the second round of conference play on Wednesday when it hosts Santa Ana at 5:30 p.m. It is also homecoming night.   So. 1/25/2012  Women's basketball team gets knocked off in overtime by Fullerton

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team had its chances, but came up a little short in a 67-63 Orange Empire Conference loss to Fullerton Wednesday night at home. The game featured two of the three teams tied for first place in conference. With the win, Fullerton remained in first place and improved its record to 16-7 overall and 5-1 in conference. Irvine Valley slipped to 13-11 overall and 4-2 in conference. IVC trailed, 34-22, at halftime, but came roaring back in the second half and took the lead at 44-43 on a lay-up by sophomore forward Jackie Fa'asamala with 7:43 to play. IVC went up, 48-45, on a four-point play (three-pointer and free throw) by sophomore forward Megan Blackwell with 6:31 left. And a lay-up by freshman forward Shomari McCorkle with 4:15 to go gave IVC a 53-50 advantage. Fullerton came right back with four straight points off baskets by Alexandra Coleman-Thomas and Carlisha Phillips to go ahead, 54-53. A lay-up by freshman guard Amber Wharton put IVC back in front, 55-54, with 1:58 to play. Fullerton missed a shot and then turned the ball over on its next two possessions. And then Blackwell was fouled shooting a three-pointer with 16 seconds to play. She missed the first, but made the next two to give Irvine Valley a 57-54 lead. Fullerton tied the game on a banked in three-pointer by Phillips with three seconds left and the game went to overtime. Irvine Valley scored the first four points of overtime and later held a 63-59 lead with 3:11 to play after a lay-up by McCorkle, but the Lasers didn't score again. The Lasers missed their final eight shots from the field in the overtime period. Fullerton tied it at 63-63 on a basket inside by Chanel Benson and then took the lead for good at 65-63 on a jumper by Phillips with 1:00 left. Fullerton shot just 35.6 percent from the field (26 of 73) for the game, but out-rebounded IVC 51-38, including 22-10 on the offensive glass. Irvine Valley shot 41.9 percent (26 of 62) for the game. Fullerton was paced by Coleman-Thomas with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Phillips with 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Benson with 10 points and 10 rebounds. IVC was led by Wharton with 19 points, McCorkle with 15 points and Blackwell with 13 points. Irvine Valley has its bye in conference on Friday and hosts Santa Ana at 5:30 to begin the second round of conference play next Wednesday.   Box score

1/21/2012  Lasers hand Cypress its first conference loss, move into tie for first

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team won its third straight game and moved into a tie for first place in the Orange Empire Conference with a 66-60 win at Cypress on Friday night. The Lasers also handed Cypress its first loss in conference play. Irvine Valley, Cypress and Fullerton are all tied for first in conference with records of 4-1. Irvine Valley hosts Fullerton in an important battle Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. Against Cypress, freshman forward Shomari McCorkle led the way with 18 points, nine rebounds and two steals in 38 minutes. Sophomore forwards Jackie Fa'asamala and Megan Blackwell each contributed 10 points, while freshman point guard Amber Wharton added nine points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. IVC did a nice job defensively against the Chargers. Cypress shot just 35.9 percent (23 of 64) from the field for the game. And the Lasers did a nice job of sharing the ball on offense, recording 16 assists on their 26 made baskets. They were also 9 of 9 from the free throw line. Cypress was ahead early in the game, but Irvine Valley took the lead midway through the first half and was up most of the rest of the way. The Lasers were ahead, 33-26, at halftime and up by as many as 12 points (38-26) early in the second half on a three-pointer by Blackwell. Cypress battled back and took a 52-51 lead on two free throws by Melissa Jensen with 8:17 remaining. IVC took the lead right back on lay-up by McCorkle. The lay-up was part of a 6-0 run that gave the Lasers the lead for good. Cypress pulled to within 62-20 with 42 seconds left, but Irvine Valley scored the final four points of the game on a jumper by Fa'asamala and two free throws by Wharton. 1/18/2012  Women's basketball team wins second in a row, beats Riverside

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team is showing that it is a team to be reckoned with in the Orange Empire Conference. The Lasers moved into a tie for second place in the conference standings with a 61-49 win over an under-manned Riverside team Wednesday night at home. The Lasers improved their record to 12-10 overall and 3-1 in conference. Cypress leads the conference at 4-0. Irvine Valley moved into a tie with Fullerton for second. IVC plays at Cypress on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Riverside, which used only five players, fell to 7-13 overall and 1-3 in conference. Riverside got off to a solid start and led, 16-7, after a jumper by Shanika Ezell with 10:48 left in the first half. But Irvine Valley out-scored Riverside, 23-10, the rest of the half to go into halftime ahead, 32-26. Freshman forward Shomari McCorkle and sophomore forward Megan Blackwell each had eight points in the first half for IVC. The Lasers increased their lead early in the second half. Riverside scored the first two points of the half, but Irvine Valley went on a 10-0 run to take a 40-28 lead on a jumper by sophomore forward Jackie Fa'asamala. A 7-0 run got Riverside to within 40-35. Irvine Valley then scored five straight, capped by a lay-up by McCorkle, which gave IVC a 45-35 lead with 12:32 to play. Irvine Valley's advantage rose to 54-42 on a lay-up by Blackwell with 6:17 remaining. Riverside didn't get closer than nine points of the rest of the way. Blackwell finished with 14 points to pace the Lasers. Fa'asamala had 13 points and seven rebounds, sophomore forward Melanie Kashanchi and McCorkle each added 10 points. McCorkle also ahd a team-high eight rebounds and three steals. Freshman point guard Amber Wharton had eight assists to go along with six points. IVC shot 38.3 percent (23 of 60) from the field for the game. The Lasers had 17 assists on their 23 made baskets. Riverside was led by Ezell with 13 points and Rikki Frohmader, with 12 points. IVC held Riverside to 31.6 percent from the field (18 of 57) for the contest.   Box score

1/13/2012  Women's basketball team ends game with a flury to beat OCC

There isn’t a whole lot separating the Irvine Valley and Orange Coast women's basketball teams. For the third time this season, the two teams played a game that went down to the wire. Irvine Valley scored the final six points of the contest Friday night to come away with a 56-55 Orange Empire Conference victory at home. IVC had defeated OCC, 44-42, in the Irvine Valley tournament in early December and then Orange Coast beat Irvine Valley, 67-60, in OCC's own tournament in late December. On Friday, Orange Coast took a 55-50 lead with 1:20 left on a lay-up by Anna Bartel. Freshman point guard Amber Wharton was fouled shooting a three-pointer the next time down the floor for Irvine Valley and she sank all three free throws to make it a 55-53 game. After a timeout by Orange Coast, the Pirates committed a turnover with 50 seconds left. Irvine Valley's Dominique Santos answered with a three-pointer to put the Lasers ahead, 56-55. It was Irvine Valley's first lead since it was up, 42-40, with 7:17 to play. Orange Coast called another timeout and out of the break, the Pirates turned the ball over again with only five seconds to play. Orange Coast immediately fouled Irvine Valley freshman forward Shomari McCorkle. McCorkle missed the free throw and Orange Coast got the rebound, but was unable to get a shot off as time expired. The Pirates led by as many as eight points (51-43) with 4:20 left in the game. Irvine Valley got off to a slow start in the contest. It trailed Orange Coast, 18-6, with 8:15 left in the first half. Orange Coast was up, 25-16, after a lay-up by Ashley Engeln with 5:12 left. But Irvine Valley closed out the first half on a 10-0 run to take a 26-25 lead into halftime. Wharton made two free throws and a three-pointer, sophomore forward Melanie Kashanchi made a lay-up and two free throws and sophomore guard/forward Ashlie Washington hit a three-pointer to put IVC ahead, 26-25, with 1:24 left in the first half. The teams weren't separated by more than five points in the second half until Orange Coast went on a 11-1 run over a 3:16 span to take the 51-43 lead. Irvine Valley won despite shooting just 30.4 percent (17 of 56) from the floor in the game. Orange Coast shot 37.0 percent (17 of 46). A big stat in the game was turnovers with IVC committing only 13 and Orange Coast turning the ball over 20 times. Engeln led Orange Coast with 20 points. Bartel added nine points and 11 rebounds. The Lasers were paced by Wharton with 17 points and three assists. Kashanchi had 13 points and three assists and Santos finished with 11 points. McCorkle added six points, 11 rebounds and four steals. Irvine Valley plays again next Wednesday, hosting Riverside at 7:30 p.m.   Box score

1/11/2010  Women's basketball team battles Saddleback before losing

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team had its chances to beat Saddleback Wednesday night, but the Gauchos made a few more plays down the stretch and came away with a 63-59 Orange Empire Conference victory. The loss dropped Irvine Valley's record to 10-10 overall and 1-1 in conference. Saddleback improved to 15-3 overall and 2-1 in conference. Irvine Valley played a solid first half and led 35-30 after shooting 54.2 percent from the field (13 of 24). But Saddleback answered right away in the second half and the final 20 minutes were close all the way until the finish. Neither team led by more than three points in the second half until Saddleback finished winning by four. IVC went ahead, 47-45, on two free throws by Shomari McCorkle with 10:20 to play and the game was tied at 49-49, 50-50, 52-52, 54-54 and 57-57. Irvine Valley’s Amber Wharton made a three-pointer with 1:55 remaining to tie it at 57-57. But Saddleback took the lead for good on a lay-up by Nicole Rollinight with 1:37 to play. The Gauchos out-scored IVC, 6-2, over the final 1:55 of the contest. Irvine Valley was led by Melanie Kashanchi, who had 17 points, 10 rebounds and five steals. McCorkle had 13 points and Wharton finished with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals. Raven Gammage led Saddleback with 20 points, including making 5 of 6 three-pointers. Shala Kirkpatrick added 13 points and nine rebounds - all nine coming in the second half. Rebounding hurt the Lasers on the night as Saddleback out-boarded IVC, 32-24, including 14-7 on the offensive glass. 1/7/2012  Women's basketball team wins conference opener

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team out-scored Santa Ana, 17-9, down the stretch and came away with a 61-54 win at Santa Ana in the Lasers' Orange Empire Conference opener last Friday. The loss dropped the Dons' record to 4-12 on the season and 0-2 in conference play, while the Lasers improved to 10-9 and 1-0. Janelle Flores opened the scoring for the Dons with back-to-back baskets to put SAC up, 4-0, before IVC sophomore forward Megan Blackwell's three-pointer made it 4-3. Flores' early hot-hand continued with another basket that extended the Dons lead to 6-3. IVC answered with five-straight points to take its first lead of the game at 8-6 before Berlin Ohanesian's jumper tied the game at 8-8. Freshman forward Shomari McCorkle hit a free throw to give IVC the lead at 9-8, a lead the Lasers wouldn't surrender for the remainder of the half. Irvine Valley's largest lead of the half came at 26-14 with 7:39 remaining before going on to take a 36-26 lead into the break. On the half, the Lasers shot 46 percent compared to just 38 percent by the Dons. The Dons battled back in the second half, tying the game at 40-40 and later at 42-42. SAC took its first lead of the second half (45-44) with 8:35 remaininig on an Anna Nguyen three-pointer. However, the Lasers reclaimed the lead on a Blackwell three-pointer two possessions later and held the lead for the remainder of the game. Flores led all scorers with 22 points followed by Nguyen with 21 points. IVC was paced by Blackwell and McCorkle, who had 17 points apiece. Blackwell was 5 of 10 from three-point range. McCorkle added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Freshman point guard Amber Wharton chipped in 10 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals and sophomore forward Melanie Kashanchi had five points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Lasers. IVC shot 37.7 percent for the game and out-rebounded Santa Ana,  43-33. IVC had 19 offensive rebounds. 12/30/2011  Women's basketball team wins two of three at Foothill tourney

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team wrapped up the pre-league part of its schedule by winning two of three games in the Pepsi Holiday Classic at Foothill College. IVC started the tournament with a 61-44 victory over Sequoias on Wednesday. Sophomore Ashlie Washington led the way with 20 points. She made 9 of 14 shots from the field. Sophomore forward Jackie Fa'asamala added nine points and eight rebounds and sophomore forward Megan Blackwell chipped in seven points. The Lasers then lost to host Foothill, 77-43, in the semifinals. Irvine Valley finished the tournament on Friday with a 75-74 victory over San Mateo in the third-place game. Five players scored in double figures for the Lasers. Blackwell led the way with 17 points. She made three three-pointers. Freshman forward Dominique Santos added 14 points. She nailed four three-pointers. Sophomore forward Melanie Kashanchi contributed 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Fa'asamala and freshman guard Amber Wharton each had 10 points. Wharton also recorded a game-high eight assists. With the two wins, IVC improved its record to 9-9 on the season. The Lasers open up Orange Empire Conference play Friday, Jan. 6 with a game at Santa Ana at 7:30 p.m. IVC next plays at home on Wednesday, Jan. 11 against district rival Saddleback at 7:30 p.m.

12/9/2011  Women's basketball team falls late to Glendale in IVC tourney
Irvine Valley's women's basketball team fought back from a big deficit, but came up a little short in the end in losing to Glendale College of Arizona, 61-58, in the second round of the Irvine Valley Tournament Friday night at IVC. The Lasers trailed by four points at halftime and were down by as much 15 points (52-37) midway through the second half. IVC used a 7-0 run, capped by a lay-up by freshman guard Amber Wharton to pull within 52-49 with 4:47 to play. The Lasers later got within 54-53 with 3:31 left after two free throws by freshman forward Dominique Santos. The Lasers took their first lead of the game at 58-56 on a three-pointer by Santos with 2:13 to go. A jumper by Glendale's Taneka Rubin tied the game at 58-58 with 1:55 to play. The Lasers turned the ball over on their next possession and Glendale took the lead for good the next time down the floor. Rubin was fouled and made both free throws to put Glendale up, 60-58 with 1:24 left. IVC had chances, but didn't score again. The Lasers missed a free throw and two shots in the final 53 seconds. Santos had 17 points to lead IVC. Freshman forward Shomari McCorkle added 11 points and 14 rebounds, while Wharton had eight points, six rebounds and five assists for the Lasers. IVC shot just 30.8 percent (20 of 65) from the field for the game. Glendale was paced by Rubin's 19 points and eight rebounds. Brooke Willette finished with 10 points for the Gauchos. Glendale moves on to play Chaffey in the championship on Saturday at 4 p.m. Chaffey was a 66-45 winner over Orange Coast behind 15 points from Shannon Moore and nine points and 15 rebounds by Ashlee Harper. IVC plays Orange Coast in the third place game at 2 p.m., while Grossmont meets Reedley in the consolation final at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

12/8/2011  Women's basketball team starts own tournament with a victory
The Irvine Valley women's basketball team played a strong second half and pulled away to beat Reedley, 57-47, in the opening round of the Irvine Valley Tournament on Thursday. Irvine Valley improved its record to 5-5 overall and advanced in the championship bracket to play Glendale College of Arizona on Friday at 7 p.m. Glendale defeated Rio Hondo, 72-64 in the final game of the first day. Other winners on the opening day included Chaffey defeating San Diego City, 82-29, and Orange Coast holding on to beat Grossmont, 49-46, in overtime. For Irvine Valley, sophomore forward Jackie Fa'asamala led the way with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Shomari McCorkle, after having to sit out most of the first half because of foul trouble, finished with 11 points, sophomore forward Melanie Kashanchi added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists and freshman guard Amber Wharton had nine points for the Lasers.

12/4/2011  Women's basketball team plays tough in Chaffey Tournament
The Irvine Valley women's basketball team might have only come away with one win in three games in the inaugural Chaffey Tournament last weekend, but the Lasers played tough in all three contests. Their two losses came against teams ranked in the latest state poll and the Lasers had their chances in each game. IVC started the tournament with a 60-52 win over Citrus last Friday. Irvine Valley held off a late Citrus comeback. Irvine Valley led by as much as 15 points with a little more than three minutes to go, but Citrus pulled with within five with 40 seconds left. The Lasers hit their free-throws down the stretch to preserve the victory. IVC was led by freshman forward Dominique Santos' 15 points off the bench. Sophomore forward Jackie Fa'asamala and freshman guard Amber Wharton both pulled down seven rebounds, while Wharton added a game-high nine assists. The Lasers moved on to play Mt. San Jacinto on Saturday. The Eagles (ranked No. 17 in the State) held off the Lasers, 47-41. The first half didn't feature a lot of offense as both teams shot under 24 percent from the floor. In the second half, Mt. San Jacinto was able to put enough distance between themselves and Irvine Valley. Sophomore forward Melanie Kashanchi had a team-high eight points off the bench for IVC. Wharton chipped in seven points, nine rebounds and six assists. The Lasers finished up the tournament on Sunday against host Chaffey. Chaffey defeated IVC by 32 two weeks ago, but Sunday's third-place game was a different story. Irvine Valley took the lead midway through the second half and trailed by only three with just a minute left before falling, 62-57. The host Panthers, were ranked No. 5 in the state and No. 3 in Southern California. Wharton had a game-high 21 points for Irvine Valley in the loss. Kashanchi added 11 points and freshman forward Shomari McCorkle had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Irvine Valley's record slipped to 4-5 on the season. IVC hosts its own tournament this week and opens on Thursday against Reedley at 6 p.m.

11/30/2011  Irvine Valley women's tournament a week away

The annual Irvine Valley women's basketball tournament will start on Thursday, Dec. 8 and run through Saturday, Dec. 10 with four games on both Thursday and Friday and three games on Saturday,  culminating with the championship game at 4 p.m. Orange Coast and host Irvine Valley Valley battled in the final last year with Orange Coast pulling out a victory in the final minute. Orange Coast will be back to try and defend its title. Other teams in the event include San Diego City, Chaffey, Grossmont, Reedley, Rio Hondo and Glendale (Arizona). Irvine Valley opens the tournament on Thursday, Dec. 8 with a 6 p.m. game against Reedley. The Lasers have a record of 3-3 so far on the season. They play at the Chaffey tournament, opening up with Citrus on Friday, before hosting the IVC Tournament next week. The Irvine Valley women's tournament bracket can be found here

11/21/2011  Women's basketball team takes second in Glendale Tournament
The Irvine Valley women's basketball team turned in its best performance of the early season by winning two of three games and finishing in second place in the Glendale Tournament over the weekend. "We ran into a very good team and a hot shooter in the final, but I was pleased with how we played overall," Irvine Valley Coach Julie Hanks said. "It was a good weekend." Irvine Valley started the tournament last Friday and defeated Antelope Valley, 60-50. The score was tied late at 44-44 when freshman forward Shomari McCorkle stole the ball and passed to sophomore guard/forward Ashlie Washington for a breakaway lay-up. Then sophomore forward Megan Blackwell hit a three-pointer to help the Lasers take control. "It was a huge win," Hanks said. "They were a very tall team and we controlled the boards in the second half." Blackwell led the way with 22 points and seven rebounds. McCorkle added 13 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Irvine Valley then defeated LA Southwest for the second time this season, 78-67, in the next round. Five Laser players scored in double figures. Sophomore forward Jackie Fa'asamala had 22 points and nine rebounds. Freshman forward Dominique Santos finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, McCorkle had 15 points, Blackwell ended with 14 points and freshman guard Amber Wharton contributed 10 points for IVC. The Lasers took on the third-ranked team in the state, Ventura, in the final on Sunday. Irvine Valley fell, 85-55. "One of their players (Carlotta Kloppenburg) had nine three-pointers in the first half," Hanks said. IVC fell behind, 54-24, at halftime. "But we played them even in the second half," Hanks said. "They are good, but we fought the whole game and it was a good challenge for the girls." Wharton finished with 20 points and McCorkle had 10 points and six rebounds for the Lasers. McCorkle and Wharton were picked to the all-tournament team. Irvine Valley next plays in the Chaffey Tournament on Dec. 2.

11/15/2011  Women's basketball opens with one win in Pasadena tourney

The Irvine Valley women's basketball team opened the 2011-12 season last weekend by winning one of three games in the Pasadena Tournament. The event featured some of the best teams in Southern California. IVC started with a solid victory last Thursday, beating LA Southwest, 75-51. IVC had four players score in doubles figures. Freshman forward Shomari McCorkle led the way with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore forward Jackie Fa'asamala also had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman forward Dominique Santos came off the bench to record 14 points and freshman guard Amber Wharton finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Sophomore guard Camille Rosales chipped in five assists. IVC scored 43 points in the first half and out-rebounded LA Southwest, 60-47, for the game. But the Lasers then dropped their next two games in the event. Chaffey, ranked 20th in the state in the preseason poll, defeated IVC, 86-54, last Friday. McCorkle led with 21 points and five rebounds and Wharton had 13 points, but no other Laser finished with more than five points. IVC finished the tournament in the third-place game where it fell to Orange Empire Conference rival Cypress, 72-49, on Saturday. Sophomore forward Megan Blackwell and Fa'asamala each had 12 points for the Lasers. IVC will compete in the Glendale Tournament beginning on Friday. The Lasers take on Antelope Valley in the opening round.

5/11/2011  Women's basketball player Tyne McClure signs with La Verne
Irvine Valley women's basketball coach Julie Hanks announced that sophomore women's basketball player Tyne McClure has signed with the University of La Verne. McClure was a two-year starter and important player for the Lasers. She averaged 8.5 points and 5.8 rebounds while shooting 45.8 percent from the field this past season. McClure was fifth on the team in scoring and led the team in rebounds. She also plans on competing on the track and field team at La Verne. La Verne's basketball team finished with a 12-14 record overall last season and was 9-5 in conference.

 5/10/2011  Women's basketball team gets commitments

Irvine Valley women's basketball coach Julie Hanks has announced that four impressive high school players will be joining the Lasers next season. They are Amber Wharton from Murrieta Valley High, Lindsay Klonowski from San Clemente High and Dominique Santos from Canyon High and Cynthia Veopaseuth from Riverdale High in Fort Myers, Fla. Veopaseuth is a 5-5 guard. Wharton, a 5-9 guard, averaged 12.1 points, 3.7 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game last season. She helped lead Murrieta Valley to its first league title in 10 years and was named MVP of the Southwestern League after the team had a record of 9-1. Wharton was also picked as a first team all-Inland Valley and first team all-Riverside County player this past season. She also competed in the Inland Valley and Riverside County all star games. Klonowski, a 5-8 point guard at San Clemente, averaged 2.8 points and 2.5 assists this past season for the Tritons. Santos, a 5-7 guard, helped lead her team to a 24-9 record, a CIF 2A title and a spot in the state tournament this past season. She averaged 6.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game for the Comanches.

3/15/2011 Two women's basketball players earn conference recognition

Irvine Valley sophomore guard Ashley Fajardo and freshman forward Melanie Kashanchi were each earned all-Orange Empire Conference honorable mention honors recently. Fajardo led the team in just about every categories but rebounding. She averaged 13.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals per game. She also made 51 of 130 three-pointers (39.2 percent). Kashanchi averaged 8.7 points, 4.9 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.3 steals on the year. She ranked tied for third on the team in scoring and third in rebounds. IVC finished the season with a record of 14-15 overall.
