Men's volleyball coach Jay Hosack hired at Penn State
Jul 06, 2009

Irvine Valley men's volleyball associate head coach Jay Hosack is heading east.

Hosack has been named the assistant coach for the Penn State men's volleyball program.

Hosack takes over for Craig Dyer who is now an assistant coach with the Marquette women's volleyball program.

"I am excited and honored to become part of the Penn State family," said Hosack. "This program has such history and tradition. I look forward to bringing my skills to the office and team, and helping us become the best we can be.

"I am very thankful for the people that helped me get here such as Hugh McCutcheon, Tom Pestolesi and Karch Kiraly. They have all been great mentors, colleagues and friends and I would not be here today without them."

Hosack, who was the associate head coach for the men's squad from 2005-09, had quite a run at IVC, teaming with head coach Tom Pestolesi.

The duo helped lead the Lasers to conference titles in 2005 and 2007 and back-to-back state crowns in 2007 and 2008.

Hosack and Pestolesi earned co-coach of the year honors in 2007.

Hosack was also an assistant coach for the IVC women's team from 2005-08. The women's team won a conference title in 2007.

He also served as an assistant coach for the UC Irvine women's team during the 2008-09 season.

And Hosack was part of the staff that led the U.S. men's team to a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics as well as its first-ever World League title.

"We are definitely going to miss Jay and all that he brought to the Irvine Valley program," Pestolesi said. "But at the same time we are excited for him and the opportunity he has at Penn State. Jay will do a great job there."

Pavlik, Penn State's head coach, is happy to have Hosack on board.

"He brings with him a wealth of volleyball knowledge and experience from different levels and coaches of the game," Pavlik said. "His experience in training individuals and teams will help continue the growth of our program and student-athletes. He will unquestionably add to our staff and the PSU men's volleyball family."

Penn State won the NCAA title in 2008 and reached the final four in 2009. It finished last season with a 27-4 record.
