Men's volleyball team bounces back
Apr 08, 2009
The Irvine Valley men’s volleyball team bounced back from a tough straight-game loss last Friday at Palomar with an easy win on Wednesday night.
The Lasers swept Grossmont, 30-18, 30-18, 30-23, in a Pacific Coast Conference match at home.
The win kept Irvine Valley in second place in the Pacific Coast Conference standings with one match left to play in the regular season.
The Lasers, who have won the conference title the past two seasons, are a match behind Golden West for first place. Irvine Valley has already qualified for the playoffs and has secured at least second place in the conference standings.
The Lasers dominated throughout against Grossmont. Eight different players recorded at least two kills.
Brandon Directo, who leads the conference in kills, finished with a team-high 14. He hit an impressive .765 in the match as well (14 kills in 17 attempts with just one error).
It was the 13th time this season that Directo has paced the team in kills. Directo also had eight digs in the contest.
Aaron Gerardi added seven kills and five digs, Taylor Gallinao had six kills and three blocks and Corey Brophy finished with five kills and two aces for Irvine Valley.
Nick Castello, who is second in the conference in digs, contributed six digs and three players shared setting duties in the contest. Garret Dvoracek had 18 assists with Craig Cossairt and James Alexander each adding eight assists.
Irvine Valley will have its alumni match on Friday at 6 p.m. and the team finishes the regular season next week with a home match against San Diego Mesa on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
