Men's volleyball team sweeps San Diego City

The Irvine Valley men’s volleyball team stayed in first place in the Pacific Coast Conference standings with an easy three-game sweep of San Diego City on Wednesday night at home.

The Lasers, who went into the match tied with Golden West for first, won, 30-16, 30-22, 30-17.

Fifteen Lasers saw action in the win, which improved Irvine Valley’s record to11-4 overall and 8-1 in conference.

Freshman outside hitter Aaron Gerardi led IVC in kills for the second time in the past three matches. He ended up with 12 kills and also had five digs and three blocks.

Freshman middle blocker Brian Fitzgerald recorded season highs in both kills with five and blocks with seven in the contest. Fitzgerald got his five kills in seven attempts without an error (.714 hitting percentage).

Freshman middle blocker Corey Brophy added four kills and freshman libero Nick Catello, freshman outside hitter Brandon Directo and freshman defensive specialist Curt Mahle each chipped in with four digs.

Freshmen James Alexander and Garret Dvoracek and sophomore Craig Cossairt shared the setting duties. Alexander had 11 assists, Cossairt finished with eight and Dvoracek contributed seven assists.

IVC plays again on Friday, taking on Palomar on the road at 6 p.m. The Lasers beat the Comets in four games at IVC the first time the two teams met.
