Men's volleyball team stays unbeaten in conference
Mar 11, 2009

The Irvine Valley men’s volleyball team added to its win streak in the Pacific Coast Conference.

The Lasers won their fourth straight match, beating Palomar in four games (30-21, 28-30, 30-23, 30-21) on Wednesday night at home.

The win improved Irvine Valley’s record to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in conference. Palomar slipped to 1-8 overall and 1-2 in conference.

The Lasers, who are the two-time defending state champions, went into the match already in first place in the conference standings, one match ahead of both Orange Coast and Grossmont.

Irvine Valley plays at Grossmont on Friday.

The Lasers weren’t at their best against Palomar, but they were still good enough.

Freshman outside hitter Brandon Directo led the way with 20 kills, five digs, four blocks and two aces. He also hit .405 on the night. Directo is tops in the Pacific Coast Conference in kills at 4.42 per game.

Freshman outside hitter Aaron Gerardi added 12 kills, freshman middle blocker Taylor Galliano had eight kills and five blocks and freshman opposite Billy Woodall contributed eight kills, three blocks and three aces in the win for Irvine Valley. Woodall also hit .357 in the match.

Freshman libero Nick Catello, who ranks second in the Pacific Coast Conference in digs, paced the Lasers on Wednesday night with 10. Freshmen James Alexander and Garret Dvoracek shared the setting duties. Alexander finished with 25 assists and Dvoracek had 19 assists.
