The Irvine Valley men's volleyball team got its 2009 season off to a solid start with a four-game win at El Camino on Thursday night.
The Lasers, who are the two-time defending Pacific Coast Conference and State champions, defeated El Camino, 30-24, 27-30, 30-19, 33-31.
They were led by former University High player Brandon Director. The freshman outside hitter finished with 18 kills.
But the Lasers, who feature a host of new players this season, got contributions from all around.
Freshman Aaron Gerardi (Fountain Valley High) added 15 kills and eight digs and freshman opposite Billy Woodall (Irvine High) had nine kills and eight blocks and freshman Taylor Galliano (Foothill High) chipped in eight kills and nine blocks.
Freshman libero Nick Castello (Assets School, Hawaii) had a team-high 16 digs and freshman setter Garret Dvoracek (Village Christian High) finished with 41 assists.
The Lasers will try and make it two in a row when they play their first home match of the season next Wednesday night.
