Pavlik and Johnson earn more awards
Jun 25, 2008
Two Irvine Valley College volleyball players recently received the first-ever Wing Lam Scholar Athlete of the Year Award.
Chelsea Pavlik and Peter Johnson each received a $500 scholarship check presented by Wing Lam, founder of Wahoo’s Fish Taco and an IVC almumnus.
The Wing Lam Scholar Athlete of the Year Award was created this year as a way to give special recognition to the top male and female scholar athletes at Irvine Valley College. The check presentation took place at Wahoo’s Fish Taco located at the Irvine Spectrum.
Pavlik made quite an impact as a member of the Irvine Valley women's volleyball team.
The sophomore outside hitter was dominant. She led the team to its best ever record, was named the Orange Empire Conference most valuable player and all-state and became the program's first ever first team All-American.
She broke the school record for kills in a season with 463 and also broke the record of the most kills in a single match by an IVC player with 32.
Pavlik's performance helped IVC finish the season with a record of 22-1 overall. She will attend UC Santa Barbara on a volleyball scholarship in the fall.
Johnson was on the IVC men's volleyball team for two seasons. And what a two seasons they were - thanks to his efforts – a 34-5 record and back-to-back state championships.
The sophomore outside hitter was named Pacific Coast Conference player of the year two seasons in a row and was selected MVP of the state tournament this year.
He is the only two-time conference player of the year in the team’s history. His 355 kills as a freshman in 2007 is third best on the school's all-time list. Johnson will play for UC San Diego next year on a volleyball scholarship.
