Special year for IVC athletics
Jun 07, 2008
It was quite a year for Irvine Valley College's athletics teams.
Several milestones and records were set, three teams just missed out on trips to the state tournament and one other won its second straight state crown.
The women's volleyball team, men's soccer team and men's basketball teams each came up just one game short of reaching the state tournament.
The men's basketball team, which finished with a record of 27-5, had arguably its best season. The women's volleyball team was ranked No. 1 in the state for much of the season.
The men's volleyball team won its second straight state crown, defeating Orange Coast in three straight games. The team finished with a record of 18-2.
Sophomore outside hitter Peter Johnson was named the tournament's most valuable player as well as the conference player of the year.
He was also selected as the IVC male scholar athlete of the year last month. The female scholar athlete of the year was Chelsea Pavlik. Pavlik was also named the conference player of the year.
In all sports, Irvine Valley had 34 all-conference selections, two all-Southern California selections, four all-state picks and one All-American. Pavlik was named first team All-American for her efforts.
The college also honored 53 scholar athletes last month and four other student athletes as IVC Athletic Community Service Award Winners. Those were golfer Ashley Silver, soccer player Cassidy Minko, volleyball player Drew Feyerabend and basketball player Jason Toney.
