Men's volleyball team sweeps Golden West

The defending state champion Irvine Valley men's volleyball team played one of its best matches of the season Wednesday night at Golden West.
The Lasers swept the Rustlers, 30-23, 30-22, 30-20, to improve their record to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in Pacific Coast Conference play.
The Lasers hit .440 as a team for the match and finished with 21 blocks.
Freshman outside hitter Reese Haine tallied 15 kills, four blocks and seven digs. He also hit .591 for the match (15-2-22).
Sophomore outside hitter Peter Johnson also stood out with 13 kills, five blocks and five digs. He hit .409.
Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Suttich continued his run of solid outings with eight kills and the middle blocking tandem of Nick Martus and Adam El-Rakabawy combined for 11 kills and 10 blocks.
Martus also hit .462 and El-Rakabawy hit .429 on the night.
Sophomore libero Kaleo Baxter chipped in with 10 digs and freshman setter Phil Younglove had 42 assists.
First place will be up for grabs in the conference Friday night as Irvine Valley hosts Orange Coast.
The Pirates improved their record to 2-0 in the conference and 6-2 overall with a come from behind 18-30, 29-31, 30-23, 30-24, 15-8 on Wednesday at Grossmont.
For IVC, Johnson ranks third in the conference in kills at 4.07 per game and Haine is fourth at 3.95.
Martus leads the conference in hitting percentage at .394, while Haine is second at .342.
Martus also ranks first in blocks (1.43 per game) Baxter is second in conference in digs at 3.48 per game.
