Jun 06, 2007
Irvine Valley men's volleyball coach Tom Pestolesi announced that Ted Slaughter (Corona del Mar High) has signed to play at UCLA next season.
The play of the 6-8 redshirt freshman middle blocker was one of the keys in Irvine Valley winning the Pacific Coast Conference title and the State Championship this season.
Irvine Valley defeated defending state champion Long Beach City in five games in the State Championship final match on April 28 at Santa Monica College.
Slaughter had 13 kills (second best on the team) and four blocks in the title match. He was named to the all-state tournament team for his efforts.
Irvine Valley finished the year with a record of 17-2. It won its final eight matches of the season.
Slaughter helped lead the Lasers to the program's second ever state title - the other coming in 1993.
He played in 75 of 79 games on the season and averaged 2.31 kills and 1.23 blocks per game and hit .335 (173 kills, 59 errors, 340 attempts).
Slaughter led the team in blocks with 92 and was fourth on the team in kills.
He was also named second team all-Pacific Coast Conference.
Slaughter had one of his best matches of the season in the state touranment semifinals when IVC defeated Los Angeles Pierce in five games. He had 19 kills and nine blocks in that contest.
He is headed to a UCLA squad that finished with a record of 19-11 last season. The fourth-ranked Bruins lost in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament to UC Santa Barbara.
