Men's volleyball team plays for conference title Wednesday night at home
Apr 17, 2007

It all comes down to the final men's volleyball matches of the season.
Wednesday's contests will decide which team(s) will stand at the top of the Pacific Coast Conference.

And Irvine Valley has a shot to repeat as conference champion.

Orange Coast has already linched a share of the conference title. It beat Golden West last Friday to finish with a record of 10-2 in conference. Either Irvine Valley or Grossmont (both 9-2) will share the title with OCC.

Irvine Valley is coming off a straight-game win at Palomar last Friday. IVC hit .370 as a team, led by middle blocker Bryan Simmons, who hit .714 (14-11-1).

Outside hitter Peter Johnson finished with a team-high 18 kills. Johnson has led the team in kills in 15 of 17 matches this season. He is averaging 4.67 kills per game this year.

Simmons added 11 kills and had four blocks. Outside hitter Marcus Hernandez contributed nine kills and two aces, while middle blocker Ted Slaughter had seven kills and four blocks.
Libero Sean Grubbs paced the team in digs with nine and setter Tyler Rex ended with 43 assists in the win over Palomar. Rex is averaging 13.38 assists per game.

The victory was IVC’s fifth in a row and seventh in its last eight contests.
The lone loss in that span was to Grossmont. Grossmont swept Irvine Valley in three straight games three weeks ago, although Irvine Valley had late leads in the first and third games.

Grossmont set itself up for a title shot with a 30-22, 28-30, 30-24, 30-25 win over Palomar last Wednesday.

The Griffins feature six players that were among conference statistical leaders last season as freshmen.
Tyler Schielke was named first team all-conference after averaging 3.95 kills per game in 2006. Dane Jensen, Travis Lee, Andy Frontz, Jeff Lee and Jimmy Lopez are other top returners.
Lopez was also a first team all-conference player a season ago.

Irvine Valley has already assured itself a spot in the playoffs.
The three best teams from the conference make the playoffs.

The top team goes straight to the state tourney. The other two teams will play the second and third-place teams, respectively, from the South Coast Conference on Tuesday, April 24, with trips to the state tournament on the line.

The state tournament will be held at Santa Monica College April 27-28.
Irvine Valley has reached the state tournament the past two seasons.
