The Irvine Valley men's volleyball team improved its record to 6-1 overall with a straight-game (30-17, 30-14, 30-21) win at San Diego Mesa on Wednesday night.
It was the team’s Pacific Coast Conference opener. The Orange Empire Conference has been changed to the Pacific Coast Conference because four of the seven teams are from the San Diego area.
The victory was IVC’s third in a row after losing its first match of the season two weeks ago at Long Beach City.
Irvine Valley hit .380 as a team in the match.
Leading the way was outside hitter Peter Johnson, who had 13 kills and hit .476.
Middle blocker Ted Slaughter hit .600 in the contest. He had 10 kills in 15 attempts with just one error. Slaughter also added six blocks.
Outside hitter Cory Walker finished with nine kills, middle blocker Bryan Simmons had eight kills and outside hitter Rory Jones chipped in with seven kills and 10 digs for IVC.
Libero Sean Grubbs added a team-high 12 digs and setter Tyler Rex had 44 assists.
Irvine Valley hosts Golden West Friday night at 6 p.m. in another conference match.
The team hits the road for both matches next week, playing at Orange Coast on Wednesday and at the conference’s newest team, San Diego City, on Friday.
