The Irvine Valley men's tennis team opened the 2007 season with a 6-3 non-conference victory over Mt. San Antonio on Friday at home.
Leading the way was No. 1 player Brian Lee. Lee won his match at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-2. He also teamed at No. 1 doubles with Filipe Mendes to win, 8-2.
Irvine Valley captured the first four singles contests. Brandon Myers had an easy time at No. 2 singles, winning, 6-0, 6-1. Mendes won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0. And Peter Hasrouni came out on top at No. 4 singles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The final four singles matches were played for just 1/2 point each. Mt. SAC and IVC each won two of those with Tony Ly and Alvin Lo picking up victories for the Lasers.
Mt. SAC earned its points in the two 1/2 point singles matches and at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Irvine Valley improved its record to 1-0, while Mt. SAC slipped to 0-2.
The Lasers play again Tuesday at home in a non-conference match against Palomar at 2 p.m.
Irvine Valley is coming off a solid 2006 season in which it finished the regular season with a record of 12-4 overall and was second in the Orange Empire Conference. The Lasers earned the 100th victory in program history on the last day of the regular season and also knocked off rival Saddleback twice last year.
