Men's tennis team drops conference opener

The Irvine Valley men's tennis team opened Orange Empire Conference play with a tough 6-3 loss to Riverside at home on Thursday.
It was the Lasers' first loss of the season.
Irvine Valley had its chances to pull out the victory. Irvine Valley won the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches. Dan Loney won, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 1 and Tyler Jung won, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 2.
But the Lasers dropped the other four singles contests, including two of them in three sets.
Andrew Heatherly lost at No. 3 singles, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, and Justin Shomaker fell at the No. 4 position, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Riverside won the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches in straight sets.
The Lasers were able to pull out one of three doubles matches. The No. 2 team of Heatherly and Shomaker won, 8-3.
Irvine Valley's record slipped to 3-1 on the season.
The Lasers play again on Tuesday at defending conference champion College of the Desert.
