Men's soccer team beats Riverside, 5-2
Oct 23, 2009

The Irvine Valley men's soccer team broke its five-week drought, winning its first game since Sept. 15 and also picking up its first victory in Orange Empire Conference play.

The Lasers scored three goals in the second half and went on to beat Riverside, 5-2, at home on Friday. Riverside defeated Irvine Valley, 9-6, in a wild game the first time the two teams met.

Irvine Valley scored the first two goals on Friday, both on headers. Nick Black headed in a cross from Brandon Mulhall in the ninth minute and then Edward Zepeda scored on a header off a cross from Hyun-Jun Park in the 17th minute for the 2-0 lead.

Riverside answered with two goals of its own in the opening half. Jimmy Martinez, the conference's leading scorer, took a pass from Alvaro Mendoza and beat IVC keeper Julio Trejo with a shot in the 25th minute. It was Martinez's 27th goal on the season. And then Robert Tornel scored on a free kick from 30 yards out in the 38th minute for the Tigers.

But it was all Irvine Valley in the second half.

Park scored on a header off a free kick from Jack Sessions to give the Lasers the lead for good in the 50th minute.

Irvine Valley went ahead, 4-2, in the 66th minute on another Park goal. He ran onto a cross from the right side by Scott  Drennen and beat Tiger back-up keeper Rigoberto Ramirez.

The Lasers capped their scoring in the 84th minute when Andy Martinez scored on a hard shot off a pass from Omar Arellano. It was Martinez's team-leading seventh goal of the season for Irvine Valley.

Trejo played the first half in goal for IVC, giving up the two goals and making two saves. Kurt Bond entered in the second half and had to make just one save in goal for the IVC.

Irvine Valley plays again at home on Tuesday, hosting Fullerton at 3 p.m.
