Men's soccer team loses wild game at Riverside
Sep 30, 2009

The Irvine Valley men's soccer team had one of those days.

The Lasers gave up nine goals in a 9-6 loss to Riverside at Riverside in an Orange Empire Conference opening match.

Irvine Valley scored its most goals of the season and held the lead four different times in the match, including three times in the first half, but couldn't come away with the victory.

The Lasers' record slipped to 2-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in conference.

"We couldn't defend," IVC Coach Martin McGrogan said. "Riverside couldn't either, but they just scored more than we did. This game will drive you crazy sometimes."

Irvine Valley took the lead right off the bat with freshman forward Andy Martinez scoring in the opening minute off an assist from sophomore forward Luis Miguel.

It was one of three goals for Martinez in the game.

But Riverside answered with a goal in the seventh minute. The teams traded goals throughout the first half.

Freshman forward Edward Zepeda's goal in the 30th minute off a Miguel assist put Irvine Valley ahead, 4-2.

Riverside scored the last two goals of the half, finding the net in the 39th and 40th minutes to tie things up, 4-4.

Irvine Valley went up one final time two minutes into the second half. Martinez scored off a pass from Zepeda in the 47th minute to give the Lasers a 5-4 advantage.

However, Riverside responded two minutes later with a goal to tie the game and then took the lead for good at 6-5 with a goal in the 60th minute.

Those two goals were part of four scores in a row for the Tigers. A goal in the 68th minute put Riverside ahead, 8-5.

"We just made too many mistakes to win," McGrogan said.

Miguel capped Irvine Valley's scoring in the 80th minute, but it wasn't enough.

To go along with Martinez's three goals, Zepeda had two goals and two assists and Miguel had one goal and two assists.

The Lasers played from the 68th minute on with just 10 players after reserve goalie Julio Trejo was red-carded for taking a player down in the box.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday in another conference game at Fullerton.
