Nov 11, 2008
The Irvine Valley men's soccer team fell behind early and just couldn't catch up on Tuesday in a 2-1 Orange Empire Conference loss at Santa Ana.
The win clinched Santa Ana its 15th-straight Orange Empire Conference title.
The Dons improved their record to 16-4-3 overall and 10-1-2 in conference play while IVC dropped to 8-9-3 overall and 6-6-1 in conference.
Stanley Mejia scored both goals for the Dons, both in the first half. His first goal came in the eighth minute when he headed the ball off a direct kick from Richard Rivera.
The second goal came in the 16th minute when Daniel Ruiz passed the ball to Mejia, who made his way through the IVC defense in the box and scored.
IVC tried to get on the board in the 65th minute, but it had a penalty kick stopped by Santa Ana goalie Jorge Sanchez.
The Lasers finally scored in the 82nd minute. Freshman Anthony Ramos found the back of the net off a pass from freshman Allen Villa. But IVC was unable to do any more damage in the contest.
Irvine Valley finishes up the regular season on Friday with a home match against Riverside at 1 p.m.
The Lasers, who went into Tuesday's match in fourth place in the conference standings, need to win if they want to have any shot at a Southern California Regional playoff berth.
