Men's soccer team bests Santiago Canyon
Oct 10, 2008

After scoring just two goals in two straight Orange Empire Conference matches, the Irvine Valley men’s soccer team exploded for double that amount in a 4-1 win over Santiago Canyon on Friday at home.

The four goals matched the most IVC has scored in a match this season. It beat Cabrillo earlier this season in the Hartnell Tournament, 4-3, and defeated Cypress, 4-0, in a conference contest last week.

Irvine Valley improved its record to 4-5-2 overall and 2-2-0 in conference. Santiago Canyon, which was coming off a tie with the conference’s top team, Santa Ana, slipped to 2-5-5 overall and 1-1-2 in conference.

"We have a young team and we are still finding our way a little bit," IVC Coach Martin McGrogan said. "We created some very good chances today and scored some really good goals."

The Lasers got on the board in the 18th minute on a goal by sophomore forward Bruno Sad. The play started with a cross from freshman Reza Nourani to freshman Brice Adams. Adams found Sad, who volleyed it in.

IVC made it a 2-0 game just before the end of the first half. After Nourani’s shot at close range was saved Santiago Canyon goalie Alan Orriny, the ball came out to Villa. He was taken down in the box for a penalty kick.

And sophomore midfielder Roberto Linck converted the kick into the left side of the net for IVC.

"It was nice to finally be ahead in a game," McGrogan said. "The last couple we have been having to chase from behind."

Four minutes into the second half, Santiago Canyon cut IVC’s lead in half. Laser goalie Mikhail Radchuk couldn’t handle a cross by Santiago Canyon’s Peter Davis. The ball rolled right to Allen Villalobos, who sent it into an empty net.

Both teams had more chances to score in the following minutes with the best coming from IVC’s Sad and Santiago Canyon’s Jack Plummer.

The Lasers took advantage of one of their next opportunities, however. Sad rolled a pass across the top of the box to freshman midfielder Ghilerme Oliveira and he fired a right-footed shot that hit the crossbar and bounced down and in.

And then to cap the scoring for IVC, freshman midfielder Bryan Castillo sent a nice through ball into the box to freshman Antony Muniz. Muniz timed his run perfectly and one-timed the ball past the SCC keeper in the 87th minute.

Irvine Valley out-shot Santiago Canyon, 13-10, in the contest.
