Men's soccer team opens conference with victory
Sep 30, 2008
The Irvine Valley men's soccer team's play had been up and down in its seven non-conference matches to start the season.
The Lasers were on top of their game on Tuesday, however, opening Orange Empire Conference action with a 4-0 win at Cypress.
The win improved Irvine Valley's record to 3-3-2 overall.
"All in all it was a good performance," IVC Coach Martin McGrogan said. "It is nice to get three points away from home."
The Lasers opened the scoring on a goal by Bruno Sad in the 15th minute.
Shortly after, IVC went a man down.
Cypress defender Kyle Gough sent a ball up to forward Nebiyu Girma. Girma ended up one-on-one against IVC goalie Mikhail Radchuk, who was forced into a hand ball outside of the box.
The penalty resulted in a red card forcing the Lasers to play a man down for the rest of the game.
But the Lasers didn't falter. Irvine Valley answered with three goals in the second half.
Allen Villa scored Irvine Valley's second and third goals - in the 50th and 65th minutes. Michael Sweeney assisted on Villa's second goal.
And Anthony Muniz capped the scoring with a goal in the final minutes of play.
Defensively, Troy Chavez cleared a ball off the goal line for the Lasers and Radchuk finished with two gaves in goal.
Irvine Valley plays at Fullerton on Friday at 3 p.m.
