The Irvine Valley men's soccer team will meet Palomar in the second round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Tuesday at Irvine Valley at 2 p.m.
Irvine Valley is the No. 5 seed in the playoffs, while Palomar is the No. 13 seed.
Irvine Valley advanced by defeating No. 12 East LA, 1-0, in the first round on Saturday. IVC scored in the 85th minute, getting a goal on a header by defender Christian Correa-Henscke off a corner kick by midfielder Mark Shadrack.
Irvine Valley, which has a record of 14-4-4, is unbeaten in nine straight games (7 wins, 2 ties).
No. 13 Palomar upset No. 4 Rio Hondo, 2-0, at Rio Hondo. It was only Rio Hondo’s third loss all season.
IVC also defeated Rio Hondo this year.
Steve Bryson and Emanuel Gutierrez scored goals in the win for Palomar, which finished second in the Pacific Coast Conference this season.
Palomar (12-6-5) is led by Bryson, who has 17 goals and nine assists on the season. Francisco Felix, who recorded both assists in Comet's playoff win over Rio Hondo, has 10 goals and 12 assists on the year.
For Irvine Valley, Jack Plummer has nine goals and eight assists, Corey Cordray has 10 goals and five assists, Bruno Sad has six goals and five assists and Erik Van Der Meulen has seven goals and four assists.
Other second round playoff games on Tuesday – No. 1 Mt. SAC vs. No. 8 Santiago Canyon, No. 2 Cerritos vs. No. 7 Oxnard and No. 3 Santa Ana vs. No. 11 San Diego City. Tuesday's winners advance to the So. Cal. Regional Final on Dec. 1 with a trip to state on the line.
