Men's soccer team opens playoffs Saturday vs. East LA

The Irvine Valley men's soccer team was given the fifth seeed when the Southern California Regional Playoff pairings were announced Tuesday afternoon.
Fifth-seeded Irvine Valley will take on 12th-seeded East LA in an opening round match-up on Saturday at 2 p.m. at IVC.
The Lasers finished the regular season with a record of 13-4-4. The Lasers took second in the Orange Empire Conference behind Santa Ana.
East LA was fourth in the South Coast Conference. The Huskies had a record of 12-9-3 overall and 5-6-3 in conference. They finished their regular season with a 4-1 win over LA Harbor on Nov. 9.
The last time Irvine Valley met East LA was actually in the playoffs in 2006. East LA defeated Irvine Valley in the second round of the playoffs on penalty kicks after the match ended tied in regulation, 0-0.
Like IVC, East LA comes from a tough conference. Mt. SAC and Cerritos teams earned the top two seeds in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. Mt. SAC, the top-ranked team in the state has a record of 20-0-2 this year.
Santa Ana was seeded third in the playoffs and Rio Hondo was seeded fourth.
The playoffs consists of 13 teams from Southern California. The top three seeds earned first-round byes.
The winner of the Irvine Valley and East LA match on Saturday will take on the winner of fourth-seeded Rio Hondo and 13th-seeded Palomar in the second round.
