The Irvine Valley men's soccer team let one of their best opportunities to knock off Santa Ana in recent years get away from it Tuesday afternoon.
The Lasers held a 3-1 lead in the 69th minute, but Santa Ana battled back with two goals over the next 10 minutes and the match between the two top teams in the Orange Empire Conference enced in a 3-3 tie at Santa Ana.
The tie came one day after the Dons clinched their 14th straight OEC title with a 1-0 win at Riverside on Monday.
Irvine Valley took a 1-0 lead at halftime. The Lasers got a goal from freshman forward Corey Cordray off an assist from freshman midfielder Jack Plummer in stoppage time during the first half. The goal was Cordray's team-tying ninth of the season.
Juan Carlos Agripino tied the game at 1-1 four minutes into the second half on a pass from Miguel Cucue for Santa Ana.
But then IVC scored the next two goals. Sophomore midfielder Beau Campbell scored in the 61st minute on an assist from Cordray and sophomore midfielder Mark Shadrack gave the Lasers a 3-1 lead on an unassisted goal in the 69th minute.
Ramon Quintana cut the Lasers lead to 3-2 when he sent a header into the back of the net off of a corner kick by Luis Uribe. And then Uribe set up the game tying goal in the 80th minute when he sent a pass through the defense and connected with Jean Bello, who found the back of the net.
Santa Ana goalie Julian Hernandez gave up all three goals while making only one save before Enrique Romero finished the last 15 minutes of the game without facing a single shot.
IVC freshman goalie Mikhail Radchuk had six saves for the Lasers, who saw their record go to 12-4-4 and 7-2-4 in conference.
The Lasers finish up the regular season with a conference game at home against Cypress on Thursday at 1 p.m.
