Nov 03, 2006
The Irvine Valley men's soccer team bounced back from a disappointing tie with Orange Coast on Tuesday to defeat Santiago Canyon, 4-0, in an Orange Empire Conference game Friday afternoon at home.
Chad Murray and Taylor Campbell each scored two goals for the Lasers in the win.
Campbell has now scored a goal in three straight matches for Irvine Valley.
Murray got Irvine Valley (13-3-3, 9-1-2) on the board in the 17th minute when he took advantage of a ball misplayed by a Santiago Canyon defender. Murray gathered it and then beat Santiago Canyon goalie Carson Hedrick with a shot.
Murray was at it again about 12 minutes later. He received a nice through ball down the middle from Greg Ricks and then beat Hedrick with a shot into the upper corner.
The Lasers were in control throughout and put the game away in the 65th minute on the first of Campbell’s two goals. Roberto Linck took the ball across the middle of the field and snuck a pass inside the box to Campbell, who flicked the ball by Hedrick.
It was Linck’s team-high seventh assist of the year.
Campbell’s last goal came in the 77th minute on a pass from Beau Campbell.
Jesus Olivera played 80 minutes and recorded four saves and Xavier Garay played the final 10 minutes with no saves in goal for Irvine Valley. The shutout was the team’s sixth of the season. All six have come in conference play.
Irvine Valley finishes the regular season next week with two games.
It plays at Golden West on Tuesday and then hosts Santa Ana in what could be a match for the conference title next Friday at 3 p.m. Santa Ana entered today’s action with a two-point lead over the Lasers for first place.
