The Irvine Valley men's soccer team captured its third straight win in Orange Empire Conference play winning at Orange Coast on Friday, 3-1.
Dillon McEwin was busy again for the Lasers. He gave the team a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when an OCC defender missed a clearing kick and the ball ended up on McEwin’s foot, who then scored. Darren Whitty got the assist on the play. It was McEwin's sixth goal of the season, sixth in the last seven games and fifth game in a row with a goal.
Orange Coast tied the game in the 60th minute on a penalty kick. Off a corner kick, Irvine Valley's Danny Bridgman was given a red card for an intentional hand ball in the goal area. The referee awarded the free kick and Matt Schirmer hit a low, grounder into the left corner of the goal.
Down a player, Irvine Valley kept battling. The Lasers scored two goals in the final 20 minutes of the game to pull out the win.
In the 72nd minute Ryan Borunda scored off a corner kick from Whitty. The corner by Whitty went through a pile of bodies and onto the foot of Borunda, who ripped a shot into the lower-right corner of the goal to give the Lasers the lead for good.
Luis Miguel capped the scoring for the Lasers in the closing minutes. With Orange Coast sending a number of players up front to try and get an equalizing goal, defender Scott Kea sent a long pass to Miguel, who outran the lone Pirate defender and beat the OCC keeper.
Jesus Olivera ended up with eight saves in goal for the Lasers, who improved their record to 7-2-2 overall and 3-0-1 in conference.
