Sep 04, 2006
The Irvine Valley men’s soccer team made it to the title match of the Hartnell College Tournament last weekend.
The Lasers started with a 2-1 victory over Canada College last Friday and then defeated host Hartnell, 5-1.
Troy Cole and Luis Miguel scored goals and Sina Alipour had assist for the Lasers in the match with Canada.
Against Hartnell, Greg Ricks and Danny Bridgman each had a goal and an assist and Roberto Linck, Corey Cordray and Beau Campbell also scored for Irvine Valley.
The two victories moved the Lasers on to the title match where they took on Fresno City, which was ranked No. 20 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/Adidas 2006 preseason junior college poll.
Irvine Valley got two unassisted goals from Miguel in the match. The teams were tied, 2-2, at the end of regulation. Fresno City ended up winning the title in penalty kicks, 4-2.
“We still played really well,” Irvine Valley Coach Martin McGrogan said. “Fresno was a strong and very physical team and we hung in there. We were disappointed with the final result, but it was a great test and a good growing experience for our guys.”
Miguel continued to shine for the Lasers. After scoring two goals in the team’s opener (a 3-1 win over Moorpark) last week, he had three goals in the tournament over the weekend.
Freshman goalie Jesus Olivera also started and played the full 90 minutes in each game for Irvine Valley in the tournament.
Irvine Valley (3-0-1) plays again on Friday, hosting Compton College at 1 p.m. in a non-conference match.
