Men's soccer team rallies to beat Orange Coast
Oct 04, 2005
The Irvine Valley men's soccer team picked up its first win in
Orange Empire Conference play, coming back to beat Orange Coast,
2-1, Tuesday afternoon at Irvine Valley.
The Lasers (5-3-1,
1-1-1) scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the match, including
one two minutes into extra time to pull out the win.
There were five minutes of extra time total in the second half.
Orange
Coast (7-3-3, 2-1-0) got off to a quick start, scoring in the second
minute. Ian Secor took control of a bad clearance by Irvine Valley
goalie Stuart Nichols in the Laser end. Secor didn’t waste any time,
chipping the ball into the net over Nichols from about 30 yards
out.
Neither team had any other real good chances to score in the first half.
David
Barnett nearly scored for Orange Coast early in the second half after
gaining possession of a loose ball in the box, but IVC defender Josh
Montoya slid in and knocked the ball away from Barnett.
Sean
Keefe had a similar good chance for IVC early in the second half, but
Orange Coast goalie Trent Painter made a diving save on Keefe’s
shot.
Keefe connected on his next opportunity. In
the 86th minute, Steve Wulff lofted a free kick to the left side of the
box. It found the head of Irvine Valley’s Matt Johnson. Johnson
directed a pass back into the middle of the box where Keefe headed the
ball into the net past Painter.
The Lasers took
the lead for good in the 92nd minute. After a long punt by Nichols,
Johnson got tangled up with an Orange Coast defender on the right side.
The ball rolled free past both players and Chad Murray was
there to take advantage. He dribbled in on goal and then fired a
line-drive shot by Painter to the far side of the net.
It was Murray's first goal as a Laser.
Nichols finished with six saves in goal. Painter had eight saves in goal for the Pirates.
Irvine Valley out-shot Orange Coast, 14-11, in the contest.
Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, hosting Santiago Canyon at 3 p.m.
