IVC Men's Soccer Coaching Staff

Head Coach Martin McGroganMartin McGrogan - Head Coach

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the Irvine Valley College men's soccer program. As always, we have two major goals. First, to help our student athletes achieve their educational goals, and second, to play competitive soccer. At IVC, we understand that long after the drama of victory and defeat have been forgotten, your education has not.

With that in mind, we continually strive to emphasize the importance of education to our student athletes. We have been fortunate to have many of our student athletes transfer to four-year institutions (several with athletic scholarships) such as UC Irvine, University of Denver, University of Portland, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Lutheran, Chapman, Concordia, Cal State Los Angeles, UC Santa Barbara and Vanguard, just to name a few.

In addition to the student athletes who have continued their educational goals, we have also had two players who played professional soccer in Major League Soccer: Brad Wilson (Los Angeles Galaxy), and Ryan Tinsley (Kansas City Wizards and Chicago Fire). IVC has also been represented in the professional indoor soccer league by Matt West (Anaheim Splash). West, who went on to play for the Utah Blitz in the USISL, is now the successful head coach of the Mater Dei High girls soccer program.

We sincerely hope that this year's team can continue in this tradition.

As in any endeavor, there are many people who we have to thank for their continued support of the men's soccer program. Our deepest gratitude goes out to Dr. Phil Stanley, IVC's founding athletic director, former athletic director Aracely Mora, trainers Janet Olsen and Devin Adams, counselor Sheryl Kempkes, equipment manager Andrew Alhadeff, sports information director Brent Shaver, former assistant coach Clyde Best, former assistant coach and current supporter Jovan Stojanovsky, current assistant Peter Carey, former assistant coach and new women's head coach Joe Supe and athletic director and dean Keith Shackleford.

Lastly, I would like to thank all of the student athletes who have taken pride in representing the Irvine Valley College Lasers in the program's existence. They have all shown class on and off the playing field. May they always achieve their goals.

His career began at FC Inter Sibiu in Romania’s 2nd Division where he played for three years before joining the 1st Division Romanian powerhouse, Steaua Bucharest in 1998.

During his run with Steaua, they won the Romanian Cup and competed in the UEFA Cup.

In 2000, Alex won the USA Green Card Lottery in Romania and decided to take his chances and leave Romania. Upon arriving in the United States Zotinca played for the MISL team Kansas City Comets from 2000-2003 where he made the MISL All-Rookie Team as well as the MISL All Star Team.

He then joined Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards in 2003 where he played for four years including the MLS cup Final in 2004.

Then in 2007, Alex joined Chivas USA and decided to make Orange County his permanent home. He played three seasons with Chivas USA, and with them played in the MLS Playoffs in 2007 and 2008.

Following the 2010 season he retired, subsequent to undergoing back and knee surgery in the same year.

After retiring, Alex was named the Head Coach for the Chivas USA U14 Soccer Development Academy Team. In 2012, he joined the coaching staff at IVC. He is also currently coaching club soccer with United FC in San Juan Capistrano.
