Daniel Neben continued his excellent play and paced the Irvine Valley men's golf team with a 2 over par 74 as the Lasers picked up a Orange Empire Conference road win in a strange round on Monday at Victoria Golf Course in Riverside.
Irvine Valley finished with a score of 396. Riverside came in at 416.
Orange Coast and Santa Ana also picked up victories over host Riverside.
Neben scored a par on the first nine holes and a birdie on the 10th. The first 10 holes were played in two hours and 10 minutes.
But then a 12-team high school tournament was allowed to start.
"They were given a shotgun start to play all of the holes in front of the college match, all of the holes behind the college match and even took tee positions in between each college group," IVC Coach Ben Burnett said.
"The result was gridlock and a loss of focus. After completing each of the last nine holes, the college teams had to sit an average of 20 minutes per hole before they could resume play."
Scores soared because of it.
IVC captain Adam Ruppert played the front nine in 1 over par. But his traffic jammed back nine soared to 9 over par.
Joseph Filia played the front nine in 2 over par. His back nine was 6 over par.
But IVC still earned the win.
"A win is a win," Burnett said. "We have played very well at times and still wound up with a loss. We will take this win and move on."
IVC's next match is at Oak Creek on Wednesday at 1:20 p.m. The Lasers will host Palomar and Santa Ana in the conference contest.
