Men's golf team suffers costly loss
Mar 12, 2009
In what could be a costly team loss, the Irvine Valley men's golf team was defeated by host Santa Ana on Wednesday at the South Course at Los Serranos in Chino Hills.
Two of the six par 5 holes were played from forward tees, resulting in two long four pars that adjusted the course to par 72, rather than par 74.
Santa Ana's 378 produced wins over IVC's 385 and Riverside's 400 scores.
However, Cuyamaca won its match over Santa Ana with a team score of 370.
"The Orange Empire Conference is so strong that playing good golf is not likely going to produce a win," said IVC coach Ben Burnett. "The total team score has to be par or very close to it in order to be competitive."
IVC captain Adam Ruppert led the team with three birdies, 11 pars, three bogeys and a double bogey to shoot a 2 over par 74.
Daniel Neben followed with two birdies, 11 pars and five bogeys for a score of 75. Sylvain Debiais had three birdies, nine pars, four bogeys and two double bogeys for a 77. Joey Fuscardo had one birdie, nine pars, seven bogeys and one double bogey for a 79.
Also for IVC, Dane Thomas had two birdies, eight pars, seven bogeys and a triple bogey for an 80.
And Joe Chun had one birdie, seven pars, eight bogeys and two double bogeys for the team throwout score of 83.
IV travels to Wood Ranch, in Thousand Oaks, for the College of the Canyons Invitational next Monday. About 15 of the top 25 teams in California will be competing.
