Men's golf team starts season
Feb 02, 2006
The Irvine Valley men's golf team began its 2006 season in the 18-team Victor Valley Invitational.
Playing in a two-man better ball format, Irvine Valley finished ahead of Rio Hondo, Santa Ana, Mt. San Jacinto and El Camino.
Santiago Canyon won the event.
Five newcomers and a reserve player from last year's squad represented Irvine Valley in the invitational.
Returning starters Jimmy Willingham, Travis Reeves and Brad Chamberlin were assigned to represent Irvine Valley in the Get-A-Grip children's foundation charity event in Corona and missed the invitational.
Playing at Spring Valley Lakes golf course, Bret Becker led Irvine Valley with a 2 over par 74.
His round included one eagle, two birdies, 11 pars, three bogeys and one double bogey.
Karolis Raudys and Aaron Levine each shot 77 for Irvine Valley.
They were followed by Derrick Taylor, who shot 78, Cory Cannon who came in at 79, and Barney Suguitan, who finished with a score of 85.
"The players that I took to this tournament are those that I wanted to give some experience to," Irvine Valley Coach Ben Burnett said.
Irvine Valley will have its full lineup back when it competes in the Orange Empire Conference Tee-Off Classic next Monday and Wednesday at Los Serranos in Chino Hills.
"We get our first accurate information regarding the strength of all the teams in our conference," Burnetts said. "I will play six players both days."
Burnett said those scores, plus rounds by his other three players that day on the course will determine who is in the starting line-up when IVC takes on Saddleback the following week in the conference season-opener at Tijeras Creek.
