Homecoming set for Wednesday night's basketball games
Feb 09, 2009

Dr. Glenn R. Roquemore and Dr. Tod A. Burnett, Presidents of Irvine Valley College and Saddleback College are pleased to invite students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and all members of the community to the first Presidents’ Cup basketball competition, a new annual tradition highlighting men’s and women’s basketball between the Irvine Valley College Lasers and Saddleback College Gauchos on Wednesday, February 11.

The men’s game will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by the women’s basketball game at 7:30 p.m. in the Irvine Valley College Hart gymnasium. Parking and admission are free.

The family-friendly Presidents’ Cup Series event falls on the evening of Irvine Valley College’s homecoming celebration which will begin at 4 p.m. with pre-game food, music, and games.

Associated Students of Irvine Valley College
(ASIVC) is sponsoring the Homecoming festivities which will include free Carl’s Jr. before the men’s game, cotton candy, a photo booth, 50 free IVC t-shirts for first alumni attending and much more.

Beginning at 5:15 p.m., there will be a Spirit Pep Rally. In the lobby of the gymnasium beginning at 5:30 p.m., complimentary hot dogs, popcorn, and beverages will be served until half-time of the women’s basketball game.

“We look forward to building a sense of tradition for this generation and those that come,” said  Roquemore, Irvine Valley's President. “We are very excited to be launching the Presidents’ Cup in both men’s and women’s basketball. With a lot of balance in the Orange Empire Conference this season on both the men's and women's sides, we should have close games and a fun night of basketball.”

Burnett, Saddleback's President, stated, “I look forward to attending the Presidents’ Cup to watch the Gauchos face off against our sister college in what is sure to be an exciting night of basketball.  The Gauchos are having a terrific season and I look forward to watching our teams compete for the Presidents’ Cup.”

Dean of Physical Education and Athletics Keith Shackleford stated, “This shows a new level of sophistication and support by our colleges for student-athletes. Rivalries, especially ones based on such close geographic ties, are part of the very fabric of intercollegiate athletics. We are very pleased to be part of the Presidents’ Cup with our sister college in the District.”

Between games and during half times, Irvine Valley College student club members will vie for prizes in a basketball shooting competition, and entertainment will be provided by the IVC Cheerleading Team.
