Men's basketball team wins first conference game

It took eight tries, but the Irvine Valley men's basketball team won its first Orange Empire Conference game.

nd the Lasers did it in a big way. IVC put on a shooting display in a 85-73 victory at Orange Coast on Wednesday night.

e victory also stopped an eight-game losing streak for Irvine Valley.

Irvine Valley jumped out to a 41-24 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Irvine Valley (11-16, 1-7 in conference) shot an incredible 76.2 percent from the field (32 of 42) for the game, including having its reserve players go 18 of 19 from the field (94.7 percent).

Leading that reserve charge was freshman guard Andrew Arnold, who was a perfect 10 of 10 from the field for a career-high 20 points. He also added four steals.

Sophomore guard Jeff Ledbetter finished with 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting, while sophomore center Matt Ballard was a point away from a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Brandon Hucks contributed 11 points and six rebounds and freshman guard Blake Touchard came off the bench to add 10 points.
Touchard made all four of his field goal attempts and both of his free throws. He also had a team-high seven assists.

All nine Laser players recorded at least one assist and the team had 21 assists on its 32 made baskets.

Orange Coast (9-17, 2-5) shot just 37.7 percent from the field (23 of 61), including going just 7 of 28 in the first half to fall behind by 17 points.

Eric Williams led Coast with 18 points, while Martin Whitmore added 16.

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday, hosting Riverside at 5:30 p.m. Riverside is currently in second place in the conference standings. The Tigers lost their showdown with undefeated in conference Fullerton on Wednesday night.
