Men's basketball team falls flat against Fullerton
Jan 08, 2009

The Irvine Valley men's basketball team did not start out Orange Empire Conference play the way it wanted.

Missing starting center Matt Ballard to injury and with eight healthy players, the Lasers weren't sharp at all in a 65-40 loss to Fullerton on Wednesday night at home.

The loss dropped the team’s record to 10-10 overall.

The Lasers shot just 30.4 percent in the game (14 of 46), including only 26.9 percent in the first half.
IVC was also only 1 of 14 on three-pointers.

Irvine Valley committed 27 turnovers and had only eight assists and three steals. The team also earned two technicals.

Freshman forward Kwame Alexander led the squad with 11 points and eight rebounds and sophomore forward Brandon Hucks finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Fullerton led, 33-17, at the end of the first half, and out-scored IVC, 32-23, in the final 20 minutes.

The Hornets shot 44.9 percent for the game (22 of 49), also out-rebounded Irvine Valley, 40-33.

Fullerton was led by Taylor Walker, who had 14 points, three assists and three steals and Ahmaad Cook, who finished with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists. Lavell McDade had nine points and five assists and Tre Brewer chipped in six points and seven rebounds.

IVC will look to get back on track in its next game. The Lasers host Orange Coast Friday night at 7:30 p.m.

Orange Coast had a bye from conference action on Wednesday. The Pirates have a record of 7-12 overall.
They have dropped three straight games. OCC fell at West LA, 79-68, on Jan. 3.

Orange Coast is one of the deepest teams in the conference with eight different players averaging at least 4.9 points a game. Martin Whitmore leads the way, averaging 15.8 points. He is shooting 47.4 percent and also averaging a team-high 5.2 rebounds.

For IVC, Ledbetter is tops on the team in scoring at 14.5 points per game. Alexander is averaging 9.4 points and 8.4 rebounds and Hucks is averaging 9.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
