Men's basketball player AJ Kapanoske signs with Cal State Sacramento
Apr 28, 2008 Irvine Valley College men’s basketball coach Jerry Hernandez announced on Monday that sophomore center AJ Kapanoske has signed with Cal State Sacramento.
The 6-8 Kapanoske played two years in the IVC program. He was the back-up center on this past season's team that reached the Southern California Playoff Regional Finals and finished with a school best 27-5 record.
Kapanoske, who backed up first team all-Orange Empire Conference player Bryce Webster in the post, averaged 3.9 points and 2.1 rebounds. He played in 28 of 32 games this past season.
Kapanoske (Orange Lutheran High) also shot 70.3 percent from the field.
"We are all really excited for AJ," IVC Coach Jerry Hernandez said. "It is a tremendous opportunity for him. "I think it is a good fit. AJ can go in there and contribute. He can run the floor and be real active. He is a smart kid and a good student and will be a solid guy in the locker room for them."
Kapanoske had his moments this past season, including going for 14 points and seven rebounds in IVC's 86-63 win over Santa Monica on Nov. 15, 2007, and scoring 12 points, grabbing five rebounds, recording two blocks and three steals in the team's 106-60 victory over Sacramento City on Nov. 29, 2007.
He also had a solid game against Cypress late in the year, scoring 11 points, blocking five shots and grabbing four rebounds in IVC's 84-57 victory over Cypress in conference.
"He would have played even more this year, but then Bryce (Webster) came into our program," Hernandez said. "But AJ never complained and continued to work hard. And he was ready whenever we needed him."
Kapanoske was a part-time starter during his freshman year in 2006-07. He scored in double figures in six games and averaged 5.6 points and 4.6 rebounds on the season.
Kapanoske is headed to a Cal State Sacramento program that just hired a new coach earlier this month. Brian Katz took over the team on April 10 and will look to improve on a 2006-07 season that saw the Hornets finish 4-24 overall and 2-14 in the Big Sky Conference.
Kapanoske is the third Laser to sign so far. Webster, a sophomore center, signed with Utah State earlier in the season as did freshman point guard La'Shard Anderson. Anderson is headed to Boise State.
