Jan 23, 2008

The Irvine Valley men's basketball team had no problem winning its 10th straight game and third consecutive on the road Wednesday night.

The Lasers, who are ranked first in Southern California and second in the state, jumped out to a big lead early and never looked back in beating Cypress, 84-57, on the road in an Orange Empire Conference game.

Irvine Valley led, 40-27, at halftime and was up by as many as 31 points in the second half before winning by 27.

The Lasers improved their record to 21-2 overall and 5-0 in conference, while Cypress fell to 11-12 overall and 2-2 in conference.

Irvine Valley shot an impressive 57.4 percent from the floor (35 of 61) for the game.

Five Laser players scored in double figures and six players in all scored at least eight points.
Sophomore wing Kashif Watson had the best all-around night with 10 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

Sophomore forward and freshman point guard La'Shard Anderson each added 13 points. Anderson also had five assists.

Sophomore center Bryce Webster made all five of his shots and finished with 10 points. And sophomore back-up center AJ Kapanoske finished with 11 points.

Sophomore guard Franklin Session chipped in with eight points off the bench.

The Lasers finished with 23 assists and just 13 turnovers.

Irvine Valley out-rebounded Cypress, 43-33, and held the Chargers to just 36.8 percent shooting from the field in the game.

The Lasers have a bye in conference on Friday and will be back in action next Wednesday at Saddleback at 5:30 p.m. The game with Saddleback will wrap up the first round of conference action.
