Apr 23, 2009
The Irvine Valley baseball team broke a four-game losing streak and kept its post season hopes alive with a 6-2 win over Fullerton in an Orange Empire Conference game at Fullerton on Thursday.
Sophomore pitcher Matt Reyes was the star. He threw his third complete game of the season and second against Fullerton. The three complete games ties Reyes for the conference lead.
He also improved his record to 5-4 with the victory.
Reyes gave up two runs (both coming in the fourth) on 10 hits and two walks. He finished with seven strikeouts.
"Matt had a real nice outing," IVC Coach Kent Madole said. "He threw the team on his back and carried them in another team's yard."
Irvine Valley took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. And the Lasers went up, 5-0, by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the fourth.
Fullerton answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Reyes shut down the Hornets after that.
IVC capped the scoring with a run in the top of the ninth.
Right fielder Robbie Robinson, shortstop Colton Hammil and center fielder Kory Burkhart led the way on offense.
Robinson was 2 for 4 with a triple, one RBI and two stolen bases. Robinson was also hit by a pitch.
Hammil went 2 for 4 with one RBI and a stolen base and Burkhart was 2 for 4 with one RBI.
First baseman Connor Rhoads also drove in a run for Lasers and went 1 for 4.
The Lasers improved their record to 20-18 overall and 9-11 in conference. Irvine Valley is currently in fifth place in the conference standings. The Lasers host Fullerton on Saturday at 12 p.m.
